Been told to avoid this for sake of liver. So have wittled down chocolate to kitcat. I have found most nestle foods contain fructose syrup as do kelleogs cereals and breakfast bars, areo hot choclate has been ditched.

I am struggling with...
Ice cream - today we got frost bite trying to find ice cream without - yes I could make and am happy to receive recipes for vanilla only Grin

But does anyone know which ice cream doesn't contain fructose syrup and is vanilla or chocolate would be ok?

pretty please Smile

"derived from" is misleading thought, sugar cane is processed just the same. There's nothing pure about sugar if your complaints against HFCS is the use of enzymes and heat. Both are used in the production of sugar.

Added sugar of any type is not good, but it's misleading to suggest sugar is some sort of pure product and hfcs is not.

It isn't the fructose that I am trying to avoid fred - it is the glucose syrup that I am trying to avoid for the reason it has the same effect on your liver as ethanol.

I don't eat a large amount of sugar as I try to keep that to a minimum, but happen to like ice cream and the odd chocolate bar once a month or so. Therefore I want to know which types to choice.

Fructose can only be metablosied by the liver = has an impact in the liver
Ethanol can only be metabolised by the liver = has an impact on the liver
Glucose can be metabolised via a number of pathways in different organs with different enzymes = doesn't have as much impact ont he liver.

@Ivykaty, basically i think you are a bit confused!

But biochem and physicology is a bit confusing. Have a look on wikipedia? I have had a look and it all seems pretty kosher to me.

"tardisjumper - your a lot patronising Grin

Actually corn isn't kosher - not when it's passover Hmm and they then are not allowed to have HFCS

IvyKaty4 there's more glucose in sugar than in HFCS. (as Cogito said, regular sugar is a disaccharide made up of one fructose and one glucose - that is broken down in the stomach into glucose and fructose, so they are the same, subject to possibly some small difference in uptake rate in the stomach, but that's only likely if you're at maximum absorbtion rates from the stomach anyway - which likely means you're eating too much.

I'm very much for reducing your sugar intake, but I wouldn't go mad trying to replace one type with another.

fred - with respect my gp weighs me to make sure I am not getting any lighter and your comment about me eating to much would make her and I both laugh. I shall continue to do as I am told and avoid the substances I have been asked to avoid.

Thanks to those of you that where able to point me in the right direction over the ice cream Smile

ivykaty44 but your stated reason about glucose is wrong - glucose can be processed throughout the body, it doesn't have the impact on the liver you're stating it does.

If that was the explanation from a health professional then you need to get a 2nd opinion, as they don't appear to know quite basic things. Or you've got things garbled somewhere - I suspect that latter.
