Veg boxes

We get a veg/fruit box each fortnight and it is nice to support the local producer and cheaper for organic veg than the supermarket.

However, I do find there are always things I never use and which end up getting thrown away. We always use the standard stuff which we get each time, like potatoes, onions, carrots, tomatoes and all the fruit, but the the bags of 'greens' and more unusual stuff like beetroot tend to remain unused.

I do wonder if it's a false economy getting the box (for us and from a wastage point of view) and I always seem to end up having to get more potatoes, onions and carrots during the second week.

Does anyone have a similar problem? Any tips on how to use things better or should I just shop for what I need? I'm trying to menu plan too, which makes things a bit tricky.

I also get a veg box every fortnight. With the company I use you can email or phone them tell them about products you don't like, they add it to your notes and you avoid getting it in future, you either get something else or more of the things you like to make up the price.
For unusual things, I try to make an effort of trying it once, usually looking on the internet, or if all else fails, bung it into a soup or curry and hope for the best. Luckily just now its just me and DH, and we're not fussy.
I also pick up more potatoes, but thats because the ones we get out the box are no good for mashing.
I would phone up or email your company, I know mine has always been extremely helpful, they would rather you got your money's worth than lose you as a customer.

That's exactly why I cancelled the veg box. We're a small family, I can't stand throwing things away and there's only so many meals you want to eat that contain their choice of veg before you get fed up with it. I prefer to menu plan and for that you need to either know what you're getting in advance or order precisely what you need. Had the option to order individual veg and create my own box but would have had to take out a second mortgage to pay for the thing. I now go to the supermarket once a week and get everything there.
