I've offered to take a cheese board to a night out we're going to next week.

I'd like it to be quite stupendous. Smile

Adecent cheddar.

A blue.

A runny.

A fudion.

and one other.

I'm also going to take a port reduction for drizzling purposes but am stuck on other accompaniments.

And does anyone make their own biscuits? Could you share the details if so?

What you make you happy?

Thanks.

boursain. garlicky and lovely. Might not be classy but it is yummy. Brie if no not mentioned, a stinky blue and a smoked cheese.

gregssausageroll · 16/02/2012 22:18

grapes, port and crackers are a must. DH likes dried fruit with his too.

gregssausageroll · 16/02/2012 22:19

Can't believe I just said yummy on mumsnet.

stressheaderic · 16/02/2012 22:22

I quite like apple slices with mine. Jacobs do a nice sea salt and cracked black pepper cracker.

I sometimes imagine fantasy cheeseboards when i can't get to sleep Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/02/2012 22:24

Celery is a must - and black grapes.

A really, really strong Cheddar - one that cuts the roof of your mouth.

Duchy Originals oatcakes and/or Rick Stein oatcakes with sea salt.

FunnysInTheGarden · 16/02/2012 22:25

a Capricorn type goats cheese, an Epoisse, a Brique de Brebis or other type of soft sheeps cheese and a mellowish blue, like a Cornish Blue or poss a Roquefort type blue. With crackers or french bread an grapes, yum

My local village shop sells an amazing wensleydale cheese made with oranges and champagne. It is quite expensive but to die for. I always buy it when I'm doing a cheeseboard. It's made by the Cotswold cheese company if you're anywhere near there? Their Cotswold cheddar (made with chives and onions) is pretty fab too.

Walnuts and quince

startail · 16/02/2012 22:28

Ham, salami, pâté, olivesGrin

ChaosTrulyReigns · 16/02/2012 22:31

Ooh thanks there's some great ideas here.

Walnuts in honey, does that sound good?

What makes the perfect cheeseboard......

Cheese?

BellaVita · 16/02/2012 22:34

Mmm yes grapes.

On the cheese counter in Waitrose, they sell a date and walnut slice thing which goes on a cheeseboard - very very moreish.

nagynolonger · 16/02/2012 22:42

You'll be a bit short on the cheese if you're not careful....White Stilton would be good. If you are taking ham make sure you take a pork pie as well.

MajorBumsore · 16/02/2012 22:44

To go with the cheeses I'd suggest truffle honey and quince jelly. Also have had cherries in kirsch as an accompaniment and was amazing.

Idasonions · 16/02/2012 22:46

dorset red cheese

heaven

HopeEternal · 16/02/2012 22:47

There's a cheese van on Ludlow market which is sheer heaven.

When we're doing a cheese board we normally do:

Ludlovian - very strong Cheddar - crumbly, nutty and absolutely yum

Picos - strong Spanish blue cheese; not as salty as Roquefort and way ahead of anything Danish.

Manchego - Spanish ewe's milk cheese

Brie or Camembert - whichever one they're recommending on the day

Proper Austrian smoked cheese - NOT something that's been painted with a smoky smell

A wildcard - as recommended on the day

Fresh baguette sliced, assorted crackers, grapes, sharp apples, pickled garlic

I'm hungry now...

KampaKat · 16/02/2012 22:48

My MIL serves the most delicious sticky fig, date and walnut cake/slice type thing with her cheeseboard. A bit like this...

Also, try goats cheese marinated in honey.

Idasonions · 16/02/2012 22:49

heaven

KampaKat · 16/02/2012 22:49

Or actually more like this... www.comfytummy.com/2009/12/11/spanish-date-and-walnut-cake-pan-de-datil/

coffeeinbed · 16/02/2012 22:50

Quince paste.
And cheese.

LollipopViolet · 16/02/2012 22:52

Mmmmm cheese....

Is it wrong that I'm quite often tempted to go to the cheese counter in my local market for a portion sized block of cheese to snack on? I've never done it as I don't know what size/weight would be a single serving size....

Anyway, I like grapes and apples with a cheese board, and olives too actually :)

choux · 16/02/2012 22:53

Epoisse - gorgeous, runny, quite strong smell
Ossau Iraty - hard, smooth, made from Pyrenean sheeps milk (but available in Waitrose Wink

Accompanied by selection of grapes, celery, apple slices, quince.

I like my cheese the French way - with baguette although oatcakes are yum too!

Idasonions · 16/02/2012 22:55

you need a cheddar so strong it smells of cowpats

acsec · 16/02/2012 22:55

My perfect cheeseboard would consist of:

Brie
Camenbert
Wensleydale with Cranberries
Port Salut
Boursin
Goats' cheese
Red Leicester or Double Gloucester
Chutney

YUM!
