Yes, it's freaky. It's a bit weird to eat the products of a hen's menstrual cycle as well, don't you think?

OldieMum · 25/01/2006 14:17

Well, if it is, we've been doing it for hundreds of thousands of years.

sickandtired · 25/01/2006 14:19

wwb you have made me want to retch with that one!

nailpolish · 25/01/2006 14:19

yes i often think this, esp about the eggs

Caligula · 25/01/2006 14:20

Ha ha ha. Wait for this one to kick off.

No freakier than eating other animals, I guess.

harpsichordcarrier · 25/01/2006 14:21

oh god eggs

I have a love/hate relationship with them
I think it is freaky that we are SO hung up on cow-juice tbh. that we expect everyone to drink sooooo much of it

Lacrimosa · 25/01/2006 14:22

Yes we are the only ones that do and then act surprised when our childrens bodies react to it! as did my ds and dd!

nailpolish · 25/01/2006 14:23

its not really freaky eating other animals, or their eggs as lots of other species do that too. but no other species drink milk from another (i dont think so anyway).

do any other animals wear the fur of another

gomez · 25/01/2006 14:23

No more so than eating them I suppose.

PiccadillyCircus · 25/01/2006 14:24

I wonder when people started drinking cows' milk.

And why

Roobie · 25/01/2006 14:24

No other species voluntarily drink milk after the weaning period either .....

mazzystar · 25/01/2006 14:26

i find it freaky, so i don't
had a stint as a vegan as was so put off by thinking about things like this too much. better now. am a lot fatter though

gomez · 25/01/2006 14:26

We could ask a cow - would you rather we milked you or ate you? .

Lacrimosa · 25/01/2006 14:27

oooh eat it with loads of pepper cream sauce!

harpsichordcarrier · 25/01/2006 14:28

the things is though gomez... this obsession with milk means that we take away (boy) calves and kill them immediately because they are not economically viable
not a pleasant thought I know....
but milk prodiction isn't a cuddly alternative to slaughter

nailpolish · 25/01/2006 14:28

i feel sorry for the cows. big massive heavy udders every morning, aching to be emptied. i empathise fully

Piffle · 25/01/2006 14:33

Hmm it is considered freaky in this country to eat the milk of your own species
esp if you're human...

gomez · 25/01/2006 14:35

Oh I know HC I wasn't suggesting the two were related just being stupid really. Perhaps I should go and do some work instead.....

(The sadly lapsed veggie slinks off to finish some rubbish report.)

FrayedKnot · 25/01/2006 14:42

It also has to do with geography. For example, southern italians use very few dairy products, since cows don't flourish too well in southern mediterranean places with little grass.
They just make mozzarella from buffalo milk.

nailpolish · 25/01/2006 14:44

yum mozzarella

what i think is really freaky is milk in tea! whats that all about

Aloha · 25/01/2006 14:49

of course animals don't drink milk - the are incapable of farming! And things with paws and claws find milking a tad tricky. It isn't rocket science to work that out. They don't cook, marinade or stir-fry either. Or knit. Doesn't mean they are bad things to do.

JoolsToo · 25/01/2006 14:52

ooh Aloha we becoming oneness

sorry didn't mean to lecture
am big fan of milk actually
but I know I'm weird
and probably smell a bit pukey to other people

Mummyvicky · 25/01/2006 15:01

The harsh reality is that to produce milk, a cow must have a calf. To maximise production, each calf is taken from its mother within 24-48 hours of birth. Calves would naturally suckle for 6-12 months.

This is what I hate !!! My motherly instinct makes me feel for the mother cow!

Mummyvicky · 25/01/2006 15:03

A cow's milk production is caused by the birth of her calf. To maximise production, the modern dairy cow is made pregnant again whilst lactating. She will bear a calf each year until worn out and sent for slaughter. Most dairy cows are inseminated artificially. She will have her first calf when 2 years old. She will continue to be milked for 10 months - but will be made pregnant again in the third month. Only during the final few weeks of this pregnancy will she be dried out and her overworked udder given a rest. The amount of milk produced by the cow in peak lactation is more than 10 times the amount that the calf would naturally drink.

Bloody ell !!!
