Why processed cheese, meat and cola drinks are dangerous to health

Phosphates are used in many processed foods as preservatives, texturisers, to make protein hold more water (chicken, processed cheese) etc and in soft drinks such as colas. A study by the Dusseldorf Kidney Clinic has found a lot of evidence to show that excess phosphate in the blood causes hardening of the arteries and premature aging. The authors call for the amount of phosphate in food to be restricted and shown on the label as required for salt to protect the public. We need to get the UK government to act to protect the public, especially children! Read more at www.mtbeurope.info/news/2012/1202012.htm

sorry but the list of things that are 'bad for us' grows longer every day.

Well I don't think that many processed foods taste great personally. i 'd rather home made cake etc and coca cola is just bleughr! However, i do like my smoked meats etc. Everything in moderation ; it's good to have some 'bad' foods now and again.

I think it's good to be aware of the dangers of these foods to aviod over consumption. My dcs enjoy dried meats and Coke but they are eaten in moderation.

Processed cheese is horrid stuff...fortunately my dcs agree with me on that one.

There are few 'bad foods', there are many 'bad diets'. None of these foods in moderation as part of a healthy diet cause health issues. To excess, and in an imbalanced diet, any food can cause problems.

But I think the level described as excessive with processed meats isn't that high. Ham sandwiches everyday for lunch doesn't sound excessive but I have a feeling with these items it might be.

DilysPrice · 16/02/2012 13:34

Unfortunately cogito that's not actually true in this case - there is no moderate level of consumption of pepperoni and bacon which will not increase your risk of stomach and bowel cancers.
I don't operate an absolute ban, because some diet-related-risk in life is unavoidable but I do look for an alternative wherever possible, and I worry at the extent to which a ham sandwich is the default option for children's pack lunches.

woodand trees This is a fact that has been known for a long time but sadly I don't put confidence in any govts. to "protect us" as you say; Protect the big monopolies' profits yes but us? No.

Sorry to sound cynical but we have to look after ourselves. Most people go for the tasty, cheap shxx food don't they? then get surprised when they have bad health.

Cogito I wish that were true but DH has noticed he gets bad arthritic pains after eating bacon products. He has isolated them and he generally eats well with no pain until he eats the pork products.
