what to do with a massive joint of unsmoked gammon?

I bought this over Christmas, but had so much ham from other sources that it wasn't needed and is now filling up the freezer.

So, what can I do with it? Is roasting for sliced sandwich type ham the only option?

There is some kind of skin on it.

And if you serve it hot, what do you serve it with? My brain gets as far as bread, butter and mustard!

I freeze leftovers sliced in packets of 6/8 slices to use in sandwiches.

I like gammon with cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, baked tomatoes etc.

Once cooked you can re-freeze - chopped to add to pasta dishes; sliced for sandwiches as wheredidiputit suggests.

Boil it in a big pot and serve with parsley sauce, onion sauce, whatever sauce you like really. Roast potato or mash. Goes nicely with most veg. Slice the rest for sandwiches, use for pasta, pies, omelettes - you name it! Can't beat a boiled ham - the most succulent meat there is - yum!

Bung it in the slow cooker with a couple of TBS of water after pouring boiling water over the joint first. Delicious! Grin

Simmer it very slowly for a few hours in cider (e.g. a big plastic bottle of Sainsbury's cheapo own-brand stuff), perhaps with a few black peppercorns, bayleaf and cloves thrown in) keeping the temperature between 70-80 C, so that only the occasional bubble comes to the surface. Don't let it boil. You could do this in a slow cooker if you have one big enough. You may occasionally have to add a bit of water to keep the gammon submerged.

You could serve it with some apple sauce. Soften a finely chopped onion in butter, and add finely chopped up cooking apple. You could put in a bit of white wine and/or apple juice if you have some handy. Also add some mixed spice, or any combination of cloves, cinnamon, cumin, mace, caraway. Anything you fancy really. Simmer it in a pan with the lid on until it has al reduces to a mush. Serve it hot, warm or cold.
