Anyone got an electric slicer (for bread/Nice Ham)?

like this one?

I lived with a family in Germany once that had one for all their Germanic hams and sausages and pumpernickel.

I covet one for Nice Ham and for home-made bread when I am trying to do it neatly. (We have a breadmaker.)

I have £40 of Lakeland vouchers (thanks MIL!).

But since I have never come across one in this country, does anyone have one? Is it any good for British-style bread instead of the dense German stuff?

Thanks.

My dh is german and has an electric slicer from before he came to the uk - we hardly ever use it.

It's a faff to set up, dismantle and clean, so we only use it on the rare occasions we buy a big chunk of ham. Far too much effort to use for slicing bread, imo.

It would have to stay out all the time, I think. But we slice a loaf every day so it would be worth it.
I imagine it takes a lot of cleaning after meat but not so much for bread.

We never use it!

Bought when we were doing lots of home cook fabulousness but now stored away.

Ah, we don't have the space to leave it out all the time. If we did, we would probably use it a lot more.

We buy unsliced bread, so if our slicer was set up I'd probably use it for that, as there's little cleaning involved.

Dh says when he lived in germany he had a bigger kitchen, had the slicer out all the time and used it most days, for meat, cheese, bread.

thanks Smile

The family I lived with in Germany had theirs out all the time.
My dcs do eat an awful lot of bread and cheese (because they're fussy little blighters).

We have one and it lives on the utility room side (because that's the only space for it)

It's great. Over Christmas we bought unsliced salamis etc, and sliced it as and when we wanted it. We use it for slicing cold meats mostly- left over roast beef or pork is a million times nicer if it's really thinly sliced, and obviously ham.

I hadn't even thought about using ours for bread or cheese.

I wouldn't say we use it every week, let alone every day, but it definitely a gadget I'm glad we have.

TunipTheVegemal · 15/02/2012 13:44

thanks Barbeasty.
Yes, cold roast meats is another thing we would use it for. I am not a terribly good carver and it always seems tougher when it's cold and in a sandwich so it does work better if it's thinly cut.

What about an electric carving knife?

TunipTheVegemal · 17/02/2012 10:39

yes we have an electric carving knife, I've never got on with it though.

No, because I'm not allowed one [clumsy clara] Grin.

But I take my cooked Gammon, beef and pork around to my mum's for her to cutup for me.

I find it a lot cheaper to buy joints and cut them for sandwiches etc.

I lived with a family in Germany too, they had theirs set up in a drawer in the kitchen in such a way that you opened the drawer, pulled the slicer into position on the work surface and los geht's!

One day, when I am a Proper Grown Up, I too shall have a special dedicated salami- and bread-slicing drawer in my kitchen.

BettyBathroom · 17/02/2012 11:05

Have you tried a good quality knife?

TunipTheVegemal · 17/02/2012 11:07

My knives are excellent Smile

Just an update - I got the slicer, it is absolutely amazing! Only used it on bread so far and it's saving me time and annoyance, especially at the end of the loaf when normally I struggle to cut the last few slices straight.
