My dd is 14 months old and only seems to enjoy eating babyfood out of jars. I give her organic ones which are apparently pretty healthy, but she is too old for them now and they are costing us a fortune! I make her pasta with tomato sauce and peppers which she eats but mot with as much gusto as the jars. She loves eggy bread and she will eat darylea sandwiches and cheese. My HV advised me to give her a small portion of what we are having but often it is not approriate for her as we eat mainly roast dinnners/ meat, veg, potatoes kind of thing or chicken/steak with jacket potato and salad. Any ideas what meals I can give dd for lunches and dinners. I have a couple of books but the meals have so many ingredients and take ages to prepare, it is just n ot practical. I really want her to eat healthily but it needs to be practical too. Any ideas out there?

Why can't you give her a roast? My ds used to love that sort of thing and at her age and still does! Just make sure that it is chopped up quite small and avoid salt in the veggies. She could even make a right mess and let her finger feed herself.

Again jacket potato mashed up with cheese and small bits of cucumber and ham etc, ideal.

cheese topped cottage pie or fish pie are faves with my 13 mth old - again just watch salt etc also loves spag bol

Thanks for the advice Furball. We are having some lamb chops tonight so I will try her with some chopped up small. I was going to do some rasted veggies ie leek and squash and potatoes, so she might try some. I worry though that if she doesn't eat much she will be up all night with hunger (she still wakes us up in the night for a bottle!)

TBH, I think your dd could eat what you say you have- there's no reason why she can't have roasts and veg or chicken or baked potato. You may need to adapt the way you cook them but that's easily done. You can have a varied and balanced diet without too much fuss. Asda do sell frozen ready meals designed for toddlers but I've never tried dthem

I made her fish pie once, I made it especially for her and put it in the freezer in portions as my dh and myself are not fish lovers. She spat it out! I was mortified! I guess I could try her with it again though as that was a few months ago. Thanks for the advice.

I'm an advocate of Annabel Karmel - her baby and toddler book is fab - I still use it. My dd is nearly 16 months.

You can do things like shepherds pie, pasta and veg sauce and fish pie etc - I save a bit form our tea and heat it up for her lunch the next day.

I also have in the Hipp Organic toddler meals (shaped like a heart with 2 sections) just pop in the microwave for 1 min. These are good for an emergency - and in case I either have forgot to take something out of the freezer or what myself and dp had for tea isn't suitable for dd. HTH

curlygirl, my dd1 is 11 months and loves a roast, TBH she is eating more and more of what we eat, as long as it's not salty then she is trying loads, her current favourite is Yorkshire puddings.
Will watch with interest as i'm always looking for ideas.

Yes dd loves Yorkie puds!

Is it a texture issue?

my Ds distinctly prefers things to be of a consistent texture - already showing that childlike distain for things with "bits" in.

have you tried homemade soups, mild curries, and so on.

he will now eat baked potatos, pasta with sauce etc

and if you stop giving her the jars, she will have to eat your cooking! i think its often jsut that smooth blended things are easy to eat

curlygirl · 25/01/2006 10:01

Yes Mazzystar, I think it is a texture issue. The jars are quite sloppy in comparison to what I give her.

I would give her what you are having - it sounds ideal for a 1yo. I think perseverance is the key really. Also if it's something you have made and she doesn't eat her bit it's not as frustrating as if you've made it especially for her.

My DD is 1 and this week has eaten the following:
mushroom and parmesan risotto
turkey dinner - with roasties, parsnips, mashed swede and apple sauce
jambalaya
leftover turkey with mash and peas

She has tucked into all of them. Tonight we are having the messy one - spag bol.
