The Innocent book is good, and about £11 on Amazon just now.

Innocent family food

DD1 was a veg hater, but this really made a difference for her. Even the veggie burgers were great - though it isn't a veggie book per se.

I like "Recipes to know by Heart" by Xanthe Clay.

It emphasises the basic techniques (e.g. stir frys, soups, risottos, stews) which you can then modify to suit whatever ingredients you may have available. I think that makes it very good for everyday family eating.

I really like Fay Ripley's book.

Lot's of everyday recipies for the whole family - nothing too complicated, and for a change I actually like the vast majority of the recipies!

I'm really liking my daddy cooks by nick coffer and bill's everyday asian by bill granger atm. The former are easy quick but tasty meals for families with young children. It's surprising how tasty they are for the minimal effort. The later requires a moderately well equipped asian pantry but the meals I've tried are fairly easy and tastes great. Beware the asian is the down under definition of the word, which means its east and south east asian food.

Maybe I should add what ive tried in bills everyday asian as its not typical british food! I've made custard tarts (chinese) and that's just whisk up egg and cream and pour into shop bought puff pastry in muffin tray difficulty. Have also made pad thai, turmeric fish and a red thai curry stir fried rice, all as weeknight dinner and all very tasty.

I'd suggest the following:

Bills Basics - Bill Granger
Cook Simple - Diana Henry

Have you tried any of the River Cottage ones? They are very good for family eating.

Also Diana Henry's Food From Plenty.

Thank you for recommending my book! Some excellent other choices too. I love Bill Granger and I love Diana Henry too. A friend of mine interviewed her recently and said she was truly lovely - always a good starting point for people writing about food I feel! Okay, this may be a silly theory, but food is such a warm and connecting thing that I reckon the best books are written by people who are nice and have lots of generosity of spirit... oh and Xanthe Clay is a great food writer too and, by all accounts, also a very nice lady...

I like 'cooking with coco' by Amanda del conte. I also like anything by Mary contini (italian too). All the river cottage books are great too, as well as he barefoot contessa ones.

Mishy1234 · 19/02/2012 20:38

Anna del conte, not Amanda! Sorry.

Try Simple Cookery by Leiths, it's my most-used cookery book by far
