"Nice" belgian chocolates ;-)

A while ago DH went to Belgium for work, and brought back some chocs as a present. Now, I like chocolate, but I don't love it, don't crave it as some people do.... but these chocolates, wow! They were divine.

It is my birthday in a couple of weeks, and I thought I'd like to get some more as a treat. Turns out they were the Belgian Chocolates - Neuhaus. Found their website, the chocolates seem to cost over £1 each Shock, and then you have to pay over £6 delivery. Ouch.

Does anyone know if you can get them from anywhere else? Or could you recommend a different type? I find Thorntons a bit sweet, can take or leave them. We have a Hotel Chocolat near us, but I've never been in....

Thanks

I had some Belgian Truffles from M&S at Christmas and they were delicious!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 13/02/2012 15:09

If you're anywhere near London Neuhaus have shops at St Pancras station, Putney and Harrods. Otherwise, do try Hotel Chocolat - they sell lovely, unusual chocolates and their Christmas selection was delicious.

Leonidas is the best cheap Belgian chocolate maker. Very litte difference in quality between Godiva, Leonidas and Neuhaus. My dh's belgian family only ever buy Leonidas.

InTheZenGarden · 13/02/2012 15:32

Thanks :)

Cogito - I'm in Nottingham, sadly, so can't get to the shops :(
Birds - have discovered that! Happily, I still like cheap wine Wink
Belgo - thanks for the tip, I'll google them :)

Guylian chocolate is very yummie too!

belgo · 13/02/2012 15:39

Inthezengarden, I really recommend a trip to Belgium!

Bluetinkerbell -Sad hope you get the chocolate at Easter! I love Christmas in the UK, and Easter in Belgium!

belgo · 13/02/2012 15:40

Guylian seashels are lush.

NormanTheForeman · 13/02/2012 15:42

Oooh yes, we love Guylian Belgian seashells - and they are very widely available in the UK.

belgo · 13/02/2012 15:43

Sainsbury's do very authentic Belgian biscuits.

Enjoying your afternoon Brew break Norman?

I live near Leeds and go to a shop called 'Bon Bon'. They import all their chocs from
Belgium. They are lovely. Think they have a website. If not I'm sure they would take a telephone order.

InTheZenGarden · 13/02/2012 15:57

Belgo - went to Brussels a good few years back, was concentrating on the beer then, tho we did venture into a chocolate shop or two :)

Leonidas look slightly cheaper than Neuhaus, and more widely available in the UK, thanks for the tip

Haven't had those seashells for years and years, but do remember liking them - may have to get some of those too!

Thanks all :)

There must be a nice little proper chocolate type place in Nottingham somewhere.

Dh has spent a lot of time working in London the past year or so. the Leonidas chocolates for birthday and Christmas stocking were definitely worth having him working away from home Grin.

Indith · 13/02/2012 16:01

Oh and I wouldn't go for Hotel Chocolat. They are not better enough than normal chocolates to be worth the price tag IMO. It has to be either a bar of decent dark choc from the supermarket or posh stuff. NO point getting something inbetween.

InTheZenGarden · 13/02/2012 16:06

Indith, that was kind of what I was thinking about Hotel Chocolat, though I had nothing to base it on.

I hadn't bothered looking to see what we had in Nottingham, how stupid! Have just found this place, might be worth a try :)

That looks lovely!

boogiewoogie · 13/02/2012 16:42

Leonidas without a doubt. There used to be a branch in Cheshire but DM says the English shops do not compare.

Leonidas for me too.

The one good thing about my year in Brussels. (which ended up being about 4mths because I ran away back to Spain with a hoooooge box of leonidas on my knee)

I order them online for Mother's Day.

InTheZenGarden · 13/02/2012 16:52

Am coming down on the side of Leonidas, ordering online :)

Pricey, but not as bad as Neuhaus, and it is my birthday, after all Grin Only happens once a year!

Thanks all, had never even heard of Leonidas before

Another Mumsnet education.... now sort my celery problem out please Wink

Oooh, yes thanks, belgo

belgo · 13/02/2012 17:12

Smile Happy birthday!

I only know about chocolate, nothing about celery!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/02/2012 17:57

DH is flying back from Antwerp on Friday. I don't like chocolate very much. I do like the jars of advocaat though.
