Is it OK to give a 16 month old sausages or are they too salty? Can you buy low salt sausages?

TIA

My DS is 19mo and loves sausages. As long as they are good quality meaty ones (not horrid cheap ones with god knows what in them) I can't see them doing any harm. There are far worse things they could eat!

lunarx · 24/01/2006 14:03

maybe try buying them from a local butchers, and you can ask about salt content?

fredly · 24/01/2006 14:20

sausages are full of fat, I personnally wouldn't give them to my 16m old.

cathyspam · 24/01/2006 14:24

check the label carefully - it will tell you what you need to know and dont be fooled into thinking that branded ones are always better some have only 40% meat and some of the tesco ones have around 80%. Best bet would be farmers market if you have one nearby.

speaking of sausages...
has anyone (UK natives!) ever heard of turkey sausages here? i used to get them in the US and when i asked dh about them, he looked at me like i had another head!!
just curious!

tassis · 24/01/2006 14:28

I wouldn't want 16 mo to have sausages very often, but once a month or so isn't going to hurt.

you can get turkey sausages in asda (or you used to be able to)

lunarx · 24/01/2006 14:34

ohh thanks tassis!

:nods: i agree. once and awhile, something like sausages wont hurt!

There is no problem giving a toddler fatty food unless the toddler is very very fat. They should not eat a low fat diet, it is bad for them.

Sausages do tend to be high in salt, but I would give them occasionally to a + 1 year old.

mazzystar · 24/01/2006 15:00

my ds has them occasionally (LOVES them) but we buy the best ones we can possibly afford, organic, high %meat ones.

i think its like most things, fine in moderation

tamum · 24/01/2006 15:00

Helen Browning organic sausages are good, and you can get them as "speedy" sausages that are 94% pork. They do have salt, but not a lot I don't think. Sainsbury's do them.

Nightynight · 24/01/2006 15:48

yes it is

Taste The Difference chipolatas (from Sainsbury's) are pretty goo - and you don't need to worry about fat content at that age, they need it!
