Steamer recommendations please

Hi,

Have decided I should steam veg more, as DD likes them cooked to a mush, and I worry there's no vitamins left in them!

Don't want an electric one, as we are on Economy 7, so it would cost loads to use during the day.... so want one of those on-the-hob ones

Anyone recommend one?

Thanks :)

I have a John Lewis universal steamer that fits on top of all my John Lewis pans. I'll often boil spuds or rice in the bottom pan and steam the vegetables on top. Large enough to fit the Christmas Pudding inside! Works great.

Ooh, thanks, I'll check them out :)

I bought a basic one from argos for £9.99 about 7 years ago. It's used every day and still going strong!

I like the sound of the big one though Cogito

Will she eat them if they are steamed then? Just boil them for less time? Confused

Nagoo, I'm figuring I will steam them for ages, so they will still be soft. Yes, some vit C will be destroyed, but I can't get round that. But at least any other vits/minerals will stay in the veg rather than dissolving out into the cooking water.

Or am I deluding myself and just trying to find an excuse to buy a new kitchen thing?

If you want a really cheap steamer how about the traditional chinese bamboo steamer? Just stand it in a pan with a little boiling water. You can put the food on a plate within the steamer, or buy the little paper liner-type things from the same place you bought the steamer from (e.g. chinese supermarket):

Thanks, good idea

I do have a bamboo steamer, but find everything tastes a bit... bamboo-ey. Maybe that's because I put it directly on the steamer? Confused

Ikea have a double one on offer at the moment for £5.99 with a Ikea Family Card - £9.99 normally - basic but great!

I bought a basic electric one from Asda a few years ago. Found it cumbersome to use. Since bought a stainless steel one that sits on the hob. Love it! Use it every day.
