Am going to roast a chicken and wondered if I should wash it first? Normally I get a ready to roast one but didn't this week.

DH has also chucked my lemon so will it be ok if i just shove butter on it?

Any help appreciated. Am newish to cooking!

I don't wash it. (chicken juice splashed everywhere, no thanks).
Yes butter good. Salt pepper herbs etc.

I never wash chicken, just splashes germs all over your sink etc. When you say you didn't get a ready to roast one this mean what do you mean? Is it still hanging with its feathers on?!

I don't think you're meant to, as they water spray can spread bacteria from the uncooked chicken around your kitchen. If you cook it for long enough, all the bacteria will be killed.

No, you don't need to wash it.
I normally stuff under the skin with garlic, mixed herbs and olive oil.

No feathers Smile - tesco do some that come pre buttered and herbed. How lazy is that?!

My only contribution is usually the Lakeland plastics roasting wrap which saves me from basting or worrying about chicken once in oven. Can highly recommend. also saves on cleaning as I am so lazy

Oh and thank you!! Relieved I don't have to struggle to wash it/run it a bath/etc

Oh sorry, being dim! I'm having roast chicken today too yum! That roasting wrap sounds good, might have to get some of that

workshy · 05/02/2012 13:38

you don't need to put anything in te cavity either but if you put a bit of thyme on it it will have that lemony flavour

Roasting wrap is excellent - chicken skin still crisps up and I find it's so tender and lovely I can use more of the bird - if that makes sense!

Yes that makes sense I will have a look for it next time I'm near one :)
