Alternatives to creamed coconut?

DM and DF coming for dinner tonight. DM can't eat coconut (allergy) but the recipe calls for creamed coconut to flavour the sauce. I think it will be the right consistency if I leave it out but was wondering if there was a flavour substitute I could use please?

It's Levi Root's Caribbean Fish Pie (flavours include nutmeg, thyme and sweet potato) and she's allergic to nuts. I don't think there is anything extra I could add but thought I would check :)

i would just put some cream in instead.
not sure if there is anything that will give a coconutty flavour without being coconut though if that's what you're after

is she definitely allergic to coconut? some people are only allergic to certain nuts

Is she allergic to coconut AND nuts? Because coconut's not a nut. I would add some cream for texture, but not sure what would replicate the coconut taste.

Definitely coconut. Peanuts are fatal but coconut makes her itchy and her mouth swells... not fatal but don't want to risk it Grin Because of the fatal peanut allergy we've had to know what affects her just in case she has a potentially fatal reaction to anything - a banana put her in resuss a few years ago.

I have some leftover mascarpone, which is quite creamy, so I'll put the equivalent amount of that in, thanks :)

I was thinking along replicating the flavour but coconut is so specific. Never mind, just glad I'm not missing out on an obvious substitute.

Slightly embarrassed to suggest it, but would a slosh of Malibu work, assuming it isn't made of anything that triggers the allergy?

you could look at coconut flavourings from the supermarket.

some will be extract, which will be no good, but you might find a cheap "flavouring" which may not actually have any coconut in it

Oooh, I have Malibu. Never be embarrassed to suggest alcohol - DM's favourite phrase is "The sun's over the yardarm!" Grin

Thanks thisisyesterday. First I will check the supermarket for cheap flavourings and if that fails I'll put in a shot of Malibu. The alcohol will evaporate with the baking so it should flavour nicely.

how did it go OP?

Northey · 03/02/2012 17:06

Yes, pleae update, or I will worry that our advice led to a tragic allergic reaction!

Ooh, sorry! Went very well thank you. DM rejected Malibu but not copious amounts of white wine on the side so I used mascarpone. Funnily enough she brought a copy of Sainsbury's Magazine with her and this week they had a reader write in asking for coconut milk substitute. Apparently double cream is also an acceptable alternative, so I'll remember for next time.

I quite fancy the idea of putting Malibu in it so may try next time. The only tragic thing was the price of fish: £10 for 600g Shock
