Help! Lunch for friends, 1 vegetarian, 2 don't like fish, 1 hates spicy, aaarrrggghhh!

I have friends coming for lunch this week and I'm completely stuck for ideas...

My quandary: 1 is vegetarian, would prefer us all to eat the same or for hers just to be a minor variation! 2 don't like fish, 1 doesn't like anything remotely spicy, 3 don't like blue cheese, 1 hates lamb.

So, broccoli & Stilton soup no good, paella no good, homemade falafel in pittas with houmous etc no good (too spicy, 1 doesn't eat houmous!), homemade fish & chips no good. Help!!!

I was thinking chicken Caesar salad (with salmon fillet for the vegetarian) with homemade dressing but 1 doesn't eat dressing so it's actually pretty dry & boring!

I really don't have a clue what to make!

Sorry, x posts. Salmon away! Smile

Coriander a no no! Cauliflower possibly. Homemade minestrone is a safe bet I guess, if a tad dull.

They are all very grateful and would never make a fuss about anything they do or don't like, I just want to please everyone! And have a life long fear of not providing enough food for guests...

Oooh Homity pie sounds like good old proper comfort food for a frosty week Grin. Startail is it better without spinach?

Homemade bread sounds yum - with salad, boiled potato salad, three kinds of cheese, some nice ham and pickles. That way everyone can chose how much to have, which of the cheese, and it looks fab and is healthy if they have ham and spuds instead of bread. bingo!

(and yes - fussy buggers - I have a set of friends just like that - chosing a restaurant is fun - not)

Homemade minestrone dull? Have you never heard of penis pasta?

amazonianwoman · 01/02/2012 09:23

I hadn't until I googled it! Friend's mum is coming, she thinks I'm a Nice Girl Grin

what about delias vege lasange? or posh mac cheese? salads etc.
i know it's not the best diet food, but surely you can't be that fussy when eating out.

startail · 01/02/2012 10:27

No idea, never heard of putting spinach in it until I googled to check the spelling.
Yes homity pie is real comfort food.
It's also the one vegi thing DD2 will eat.
DSIL and family are vegi as is another very good friend.
DD2 wont eat quiche, nut roast, beans or lentils so she is an utter pain when they visit.

Def do soup - carrot and thyme is yum, butternut with creme fraiche, cream of mushroom, tomato or watercress? There are zillions.

yy to make some fab bread. Cheese and onion pie, spinach and gruyere tart, maybe a bacon y one for the meat eaters.

Some warm salads - maybe with roast butternut or roast pepper chunks in? some goats cheese and walnuts? That kind of vibe.

alison222 · 01/02/2012 12:53

Spinach and ricotta stuffed canelloni?
Mushroom and butterbean burgers in buns with salad?
Vegetarian Quiche and salad?
there are lots of lovely Vegetable soups and some nice chunky bread to go with it - I love Butternut squash soup , or mushroom, or onion, or .......

ouryve · 01/02/2012 12:54

Egg and chips :o

amazonianwoman · 01/02/2012 13:42

Grin egg & chips!

All fab suggestions for proper eaters but even butter beans, spinach and mushrooms are questionable Hmm

So - I'm going for soup, either carrot & thyme or watercress, will see what takes my fancy when I'm browsing veg section. Homemade bread. Then Homity pie with leafy green salad with balsamic & mustard type of dressing and warm roast veg.

Dessert will be easy in comparison.

And thanks all, I would happily eat ALL of your suggestions!

What is wrong with coriander?

What on earth do they all feed themselves on normally? You should tell them all to bring a picnic Grin

alison222 · 01/02/2012 16:55

Aghhh rather you than me. What is wrong with them all? There are too many things that you can't cook there and I thought it was difficult feeding my DS who is allergic to eggs nuts and fish and won't do spicy at the same time as my coeliac dad and meat disliking ( not vegetarian though) mum. Sounds like I have it easy in comparison - at least I can do a roast dinner and leave out the meat for my mum or feed them all pasta of one sort or another.

amazonianwoman · 01/02/2012 17:05

I know I know, I think all eating together just makes for an unfortunate combo.

I would happily eat coriander for breakfast. Am going to make up for it by cooking my spiciest Thai curry speciality with satay/Thai beef & lime salad/coconut creme caramel etc next week for adventurous friends!
