Made on a whim...

They seem like buffet or picnic food to me. How can I discuise them as a meal for DS?

Chips and beans. I can't imagine eating them with anything else Smile

StarryEyedMama · 31/01/2012 12:34

Mash and Beans - yum!

wahwahwah · 31/01/2012 12:36

ahhh beans. I hadn't considered beans. DS does fart a lot. Am I asking for trouble or shall I go the whole hog and serve with cabbage and Tizer?

OP posts:
PaschaAndCustard · 31/01/2012 12:39

NO CABBAGE! Shock don't ruin a perfectly good guilty meal with cabbage!

Tizer though, definitely.

wahwahwah · 31/01/2012 12:43

What's wrong with cabbage? I like cabbage. And Brussel Sprouts.

Your son will remember the day you fed him sausages, beans and cabbage. He'll save the memory and let it fester, and one day years from now, he'll have his revenge - you won't know what it will be until it happens.

I'd be shaking in my boots by now if I were you!

Goodness me.

Sausage rolls should be consumed by your DS while perambulating along a public highway while imbibing a fruit shoot - don't yer know!

(Disclaimer: not a lot of sleep was had last night and the above opinion may not accurately reflect that of the poster!)

wahwahwah · 31/01/2012 12:51

I made the bloody things with my own fair hands! They aren't Gregs you know, they are terrible posh Morningside type ones, with egg-wash, and parsley.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 31/01/2012 14:13

Oooh get you Wink

Post some up here then - mine always end up as more meat and separate pastry...

wahwahwah · 31/01/2012 14:14

I just had one (to make sure they were ok) and it was lovely! yum yum yum. Lots and lots of pastry. I am sure they will be wasted on DS.

What sausage meat did you use?

I made some yesterday with posh Duchy originals sausagemeat and I don't think they turned out that nice. Hmm

wahwahwah · 01/02/2012 14:23

Quorn! Yummy yummy yum. Just had the last one for lunch.

OP posts:
AngelDog · 01/02/2012 14:34

Grin That doesn't sound like proper sausage to me!

I've never used Quorn for that sort of thing. Do you use a minced sort?

wahwahwah · 01/02/2012 14:39

It is it is it is!

I use the sausages (not the mince - that's for spagbol). The omnivore DS prefers these to real meat ones. You can cook the quorn ones then warp them in rolled out bread dough for a healthier version of sausage rolls. Very nice to picnics.

I love love love homemade sausage rolls. Last time I made them I also made my own flaky pastry

Next time though I will remember to make about 100 and freeze some, rather than make about 25 which get eaten before they're even cold...

It was lazy flaky pastry, btw

wahwahwah · 01/02/2012 14:45

What's lazy flaky pastry?

OP posts:
BadTasteFlump · 01/02/2012 14:46

This has reminded me - was walking to school with DS2 (who loves making up random songs)... he started singing (to the tune of 'heads, shoulders, knees & toes'...) 'My daddy he is kind, he is kind, my daddy he is kind, he is kind, and my mum makes the bestest sausage rolls.....'

AIBU to be slightly offended? And Envy of DH?

Lilymaid · 01/02/2012 14:47

"lazy flaky pastry"
The Delia Smith recipe with frozen butter grated into the flour? That is very good.

wahwahwah · 01/02/2012 14:47

Kind he may be, but you make the bestest sausage rolls. In my book that wins hands down!

OP posts:
BadTasteFlump · 01/02/2012 14:48

It's a Delia recipe - can't remember amounts off hand, but you basically get a packet of butter and freeze it for a couple of hours. Then when you make the pastry, you hold the butter with tin foil over your hand (so it doesn't start to melt) and grate the butter into the flour, rather then rubbing it in. The 'blobs' of butter make the pastry flaky, but without the usual hassle. Worked really well and was very yummy.

BadTasteFlump · 01/02/2012 14:48

He he thanks wah - I agree! Grin

lou33 · 01/02/2012 14:52

I make mine with ready made puff pastry, and high meat content chipolatas. Atm I also add mustard and parmesan, but often fiddle about with the contents. Then i put an egg wash on them and cook for 20 mins. They dont last long enough to consider as part of dinner, as the kids snaffle them all up, as well as the bf, but ds2 often takes them into school as a snack.

mrsmellow · 01/02/2012 19:47

I use a mixture of sausage meat, pork, bacon, lemon and orange zest, fresh herbs (which rather depends on what I have ) all blended together. With ready made puff pastry, but will definitely be trying the grated butter flaky pastry -great tip! And they never last very long - I serve them as nibbles with drinks and they're always bloody gone before I can pig out! (which is probably just as well Smile )Adults definitely like sausage rolls more than they admit Wink

AngelDog · 01/02/2012 21:06

Mmm, that sounds tasty, mrsmellow.

I might have a go at Quorn, OP. The few times I've tasted it I thought it was horrible, but I've probably not tried sausages. Is there a skin? Do you take it off?

If you make sausage rolls with normal sausages do you take the pastry off first?

DS ate 3 of the sausage rolls I made which counts as A Raging Success given his

I've promised myself that one day I'll try the Delia pastry. Along with making crumpets, tortillas, pittas and all the other million things that I probably won't ever get round to. Hmm
