British themed food for a pot luck lunch

We are having a pot luck lunch at church this Sunday and we have to take in some food that reflects our home culture, which would be British (more specifically Yorkshire) in my case.

It has to be something that can be eaten cold (no reheating facilities available) can be sweet or savoury and needs to feed six to eight people.

To add to the problem, I don't have an oven at home, but could use the one at work on Friday afternoon for cakes etc.

So far I've thought of Yorkshire Parkin cake or buns iced with union jacks - I'm a bit stumped as regards to savoury ideas.

Does anyone have any ideas, they would be much appreciated!!!

Scones? Trifle?

Something involving sausages? - the traditional British kind are, well, very British.

Cheese pie (works well cold)? Pork pie?

You could use Wensleydale for a cheese pie, that would make it more 'Yorkshire'.

I thought of scones, kind of like a cream tea, but I thought if I cooked them on Friday they wouldn't still be fresh on Sunday.
Sausages are a great idea, I'll have a look to see if I can get some that look remotely "British" looking (I'm in Luxembourg and they seem to go in for frankfurter type sausages). I could do some mashed potatoes and keep them hot in a thermos jar as well.

Scones should be alright if you keep them in a tin. We had a batch a week or two ago that were good for several days.

Cornish Pasties? Very easy to assemble cold and then bake at a later stage.

I live overseas too so whenever we have anything that involves bringing a dish from our home culture I make this Delia recipe for mini Yorkshires with creme fraiche and mustard. They are delicious and disappear really quickly. I never bother cooking the beef, just buy some really good quality sliced beef.

ZZZenAgain · 30/01/2012 17:45

I've printed that recipe out NoGood.

I never know what to bring to these "bring something from your home country" set-ups. Mind you, most people probably have no idea if it really is a dish from your home country in the end. I will have a go at those mini yorkshire puds next time. They look good.

Thanks for your suggestions. The Yorkshire puds sound great but might not work with me only having access to an oven on Friday, same with the Cornish pasties.

what about a cheesecake with crushed biscuit base and the filling? I know it doesn't shout Yorkshire but it might work

Yorkshire Curd Tart
Barnsley Chop
Pie n Peas
Fruit cake and Wensleydale

I realise that something of thèse might be difficult to source south of Sheffield let alone in Luxemburg.

I've found a recipe for a Yorkshire Tea bread and I even have some proper Yorkshire tea to make it extra genuine!!! Will have a go at cooking that with the kids on Friday after school. If it's a disaster I'll fry up a few sausages and take those instead!
