Just had the worst fillet steak I've ever had, from Asda - is their meat always rubbish?

I don't usually shop in Asda as Tesco is nearer to our house but I was in there looking for non-food stuff so thought I might as well buy a couple of food items there.

I'd decided on a bit of a treat for tea so picked up a couple of big fillet steaks. I was a bit suspicious of them as I noticed fat on one of them but it was hard to see as the label was covering a lot of them and there were only about 3 packs left on the shelf so not much to choose from.

Well, they were mostly inedible. Even the kids left most of theirs and they are fillet steak fiends. Don't get me wrong, they're not Little Lord Fauntleroy types Grin - they love their burgers and nuggets and sausages as much as the next child but now and again we treat the 4 of us to fillet steak as it's not chewy or fatty and it's usually of decent quality in our usual Tesco.

These were disgusting. Chew, chew, chew, chew, and so sinewy. Just, like, scrag end type stuff. If I'd been in a restaurant I would have sent them back. A shame, really, as DH had cooked them a perfect medium-medium rare the way we all liked them so they would have been lovely if they'd been decent quality.

Anyway.........enough waffley complaining. My question is - was I just unlucky with those packs, or is Asda meat not the best anyway? Like I say, I don't usually shop there so don't think I've ever bought meat from there so have nothing to go off.

The meat in my Asda is absolutely rubbish since they got rid of the proper butcher at the back of the store and now just have pre-packaged cuts in huge fridges. And hardly any British meat at all. Now i buy from Morrisons or my local butcher (but he's crazy expensive Shock).

It's usually crap, yes. OK for slow cooker stuff.

My local Asda has a huge butchers counter and their meat is good

It would be the last place I would buy meat - I can big up TTD at Sainburys especially the "dry aged". You have to pay for steak - I am a beef breeder so I know my stuff - and you dont get much fillet in a beast. Good steak comes from a pedigree or pedigree x which has been aged properly - min 14 day, better 21 and so on. This type of beef comes from any type of beef animal - could be a total mongrel, slaughtered and put into shrink wrap within the same day. Best beef comes from a proper butcher or on-line. Personally I wouldnt bother I much rather a top quality rump or sirloin again you have to pay.

NewYear, no, I suspected it was a wrong move even as I was looking at it, but the kids were bouncing up and down shouting "fillet steak, fillet steak" when i picked up the rump instead!

Bacon: I actually favour rib eye but they didn't have a lot of choice at all in Asda and couldn't see any. No butchers counter either. Guess I've learned my lesson and won't be so optimistic next time!!

I agree, I’ve had a few really horrible so called filet beef steaks from Asda. Once unpacked the fat, not previously visible, has been rolled underneath-and the meat is tough and inedible!
