Blw vs purée is your child a picky eater or likes bland food rather than flavor

Iv been doing a lot of research about blw and I wanted to know if its true that purée baby's don't like a lot of texture and would rather have bland kid foods like Kraft dinner and hot dogs rather than blw babies enjoying flavorful dishes like chili or steak etc

Ds was weaned on purees, mashedup stuff and moved onto proper meals around 9/10 months. Had very few shop bought pouches/jars initially and then refused them all together.

He's 2.2 now and will eat a curry hotter than I can stand and his favourite is probably chilli. He doesn't like carrots.

Did you breastfeed

I did BLW with DD1, now 6yo, and she has become markedly less adventurous with her food as she's got older. When she was a toddler she would eat pretty much anything - chilli, curry, borscht, some quite 'out there' food which none of my friends' DCs would touch. But in the last couple of years she's gone off all sorts of dishes that she used to love, and won't tolerate any spicy/heat in her food.

I've no idea what made the change, but I'm hoping that she will expand her repertoire once again in a few years time. She is always willing to at least try a new dish however, which is all that I ask of her.

I breastfed, FWIW.

Oh, and I will be weaning DD2 in a couple of months... And I intend to do BLW with her again. It's messy, but so much fun, I can't be bothered to do all the mashing and pureeing!

Haziedoll · 27/01/2012 21:48

It's been the opposite for me. My puree/finger food baby has always been more receptive to different textures than my blw baby.

NormanTheForeman · 27/01/2012 21:49

My ds is 11. I initially weaned him at 4 months (the recommended time when he was that age). Started with baby rice/purees, but then introduced finger foods as well. He has always eaten a wide range of foods, but did go through a stage when he was a toddler/young boy where he wouldn't try anything new.

He then got past that when he was about 7/8 and would again try more adventurous stuff. He now eats most things........

I exc bf and blw with both dd's. Dd1 aged 5 hates spicy food and loves processed meat and junk food (doesn't have at home very often though). She will eat most things though and loves olives/strong cheeses/salami.

DD2 aged 2.9 will eat nearly everything inc spicy food.

OneLittleBabyGirl · 27/01/2012 21:53

I was apparently very very picky as a toddler. I only ate chicken pasta! Now I will eat everything other than insects Grin. I find it strange when people has food hell because I honestly don't have any.

I don't think blw or purees lead to fussy toddlers or adults. It's just not that simple.

blackoutthesun · 27/01/2012 21:55

well dd is fed mush from a jar Smile with finger foods and she will eat anything

xkatxdollx · 27/01/2012 21:57

It must just depend on the person I guess I found it interesting if kids liked things that mom ate when breastfeeding and if they would experiment more with the blw but I guess it all depends on the child

Both DDs were ebf and blw.

DD1 eats well, a good range of everything with her own likes and dislikes.

DD2 today has eaten an ice cream and some rice cakes. This kind of thing is not unusual.

I actually don't believe that there is a 'versus' at all, just another way to make us parents worry/compete/argue/blah blah! Most people will do a bit of both and has always been the way.

As far as I can see from purely anecdotal evidence from friends, family and my own children the actual 'method' of weaning probably doesn't make a difference to the array of food offered and subsequent (if there is even a correlation) pickiness or otherwise. A parent who might puree carrot and apple religiously for months may only offer toast fingers and banana for blw.

IMO blw is easier as long as you don't get all evangelical about it (i.e. if you need to shovel a quick yoghurt down them, you don't fanny about letting them 'feed' themselves!)

YouCantTeuchThis · 27/01/2012 22:02

Certainly, with regard to what the mother eats whilst breastfeeding, both of mine like biscuits Grin

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 27/01/2012 22:06

Dd1, now 4yo, BLW because she refused to be spoon fed, is very like loomer's Dd, quite unadventurous, likes plain food, doesn't eat much. Can't get her to use cutlery!

Dd2, now 2.5, was prem so not really ready for BLW. Liked purees so we went with them plus finger food later. Will eat anything in huuuge quantities.

I think it's personality and genuine likes & dislikes.

goodasgold · 28/01/2012 00:40

Firstly for some strange reason both of mine LOVE carrot cake..

When dd1 was a baby I was very precious about what she could eat, and monitored it. I did it with the best will in the world not to harm my dd, but I think this is why she is such a fussy eater, not that she was spoon fed or blwed.

DD2 was definitely blw, but at the same time I didn't worry whether the chicken was organic, and just let her enjoy her food. She is less fussy, and far more adventurous with new foods.

I do think it was me rather than the feeding method, relax, enjoy your child taking pleasure from food and whether you are shovelling yoghurt down their throat or waving a chicken drumstick around as long as they are happy good luck to you.
