my dd is almost 8months but a very late starter on solids - a few weeks! my hv yesterday suggested i give her some toast to introduce her to gluten. i forgot to buy normal wholemeal and i have wholemeal bread with malted flakes and linseed... is this ok to give her for a first bread/toast. her little face is watching me eat it - cani give it to her? also i looked on the backs of all tghe spreads yesterday to try and find one with the least salt, olivio seemed to have the lowest with 0.9%. whays the most popular baby spread? help?!?!... i'm sure my mother didn't go on like this!

for the spread you can get unsalted lurpack butter which I was recommended. I have to say I give my dd seaded breads but I've never (you might see the seeds coming out the other side tho'!

As far as I remember wholemeal, brown breads are harder for a baby to digest and can result in poo issues. Even though it may go against "healthy eating" prejudices white bread is easier for them to enjoy.

What about trying breadsticks? Then butter won't be a problem?

Try dry toast or marmite thinly spread. tbh mine have largely had wholemeal because that is what we have normally bought. You just see flecks in the poo!! White bread is supposedly higher in calcium but as unless it is a significant constituent of the diet i wouldn't worry too much.

I never thought about not giving my ds the same stuff we eat, so yes, he got malted multigrain bread and wholemeal, and we all eat unsalted butter. He ate it all and is perfectly healthy. I much prefer butter to spreads.

I was giving my kids wholemeal from before 6 months as finger food... I know very high fibre is bad for babies, but it's not like bran flakes, is it? Can't say I noticed any ill effects... Bread & butter is still a top snack in our house.

We tried to keep of wheat with our until 1 year because my DH has allergies in his family. However, we didn't make it past about 9 months with any of them ! DS1 used breadsticks as a teething thing - an absolute godsend. Bread was also a favourite when travelling - just dry bread - kept him quiet for ages !

With DS2 & DS3 (twins) they are now happily munching on bread crusts at 10 months - we find they keep hold of the crusts longer, the rest of the bread crumbles and the dog eats it !

We didn't/don't do dairy until about one (allergies again), but many people do.

If you can make your own bread it is better because bought bread has a lot of salt in it.

I found the end of a long french bread stick good for teething. My twin ds's then they would happily sook away on their ends.
