Cream or sugar................................?

ok. Yesterday i tried to give my 9 mth old DS pureed apple and apricot and he spat it out (too tart for him).

My mum suggested putting some sugar in it. I refused this on the basis that it wasnt necessary, i didnt want him to develop a sweet tooth plus he has just had his first two teeth come through so i dont want to start the rot already.

I pulled out some double cream from the fridge and mixed a dessert spoonful of that in it instead. My mum was quite shocked.

DS ate 2/3rds of it.

Which would you have done?

Cream, probably. I'd have been more nervous giving him refined sugar at that age. My mum used to tell me to put sugar in their milk to soothe colic/cure constipation/get them to sleep...I ignored it all.

having said that I used to dilute tart fruit purees with baby rice or pureed carrot. Worth considering if you don't want to use cream next time

mmmmm....cream....

What about mashed banana? [killjoy emoticon]

Agree that cream is a better choice than sugar.

or natural yoghurt

gigglinggoblin · 19/01/2006 18:53

dont see how a bit of cream will harm a baby. they arent supposed to be on low fat diets at that age

But cream is much nicer and sweeter than yoghurt, and I quite like yoghurt.

Cream seems right for a baby somehow....indulgent and tasty and too nice for grown-ups

I was actually advised by my HV to add cream to my Ds's foods to try to improve his weight gain, so do so regularly.

FrayedKnot · 19/01/2006 19:02

Umm. Cream is just milk with a higher fat content isn;t it?

Why would that be wrong?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/01/2006 20:06

Phew!

Double cream was all i had to hand. DS is so fussy, im surprised he ate at all in the end!

I also mix finely grated cheese (then heat to melt it) into quite a few home cooked things. He definitely likes his dairy products.

I guess i find it a bit bizarre because DD had a cows milk protein allergy from birth and only grew out of it when she was about two so we spent the whole time avoiding dairy products. So when giving it to DS there's this little voice in the back of my mind saying its not right because we lived by non dairy for so long with DD.
