My DS has started eating like a horse! Does anyone have any quick and filling snack ideas apart from fruit/veg/dried fruit/yoghurt/honey sandwiches?

Just marking my place, I too struggle with healthy, homemade snack ideas apart from fruit.

How old is he?

DD (16month) is in horse mode too. I keep a few hard boiled eggs, cooked chicken pieces and cold pasta salad in the fridge for snacking on mid meals. Also flapjacks are great as oats are really filling.

I make some similar to these flapjack

Breadsticks, rice cakes, crackers and cheese.

Hardboiled eggs, cold meat.

Homemade mini muffins (use wholemeal flour if poss).

Pitta bread strips with houmous/tzatziki for dipping.

The simple things are often the best, carb based:

  • Bread roll with butter
  • Small sandwich with marmite/ham/cheese
  • Thick slice of tea loaf

IMO fruit and veg are great n all but they need carbs served with if he's having a growth spurt. You don't say how old - my DS is 8 and if he's starving he'll often get one of the above when he gets in from school with some fruit or veg as its 2 hours until dinner. IMO its better to give him one big balanced thing eg sandwich and fruit rather than lots of itty bitty stuff.

Oh I'm having the same problem with DD she wants something else as soon as she's finished....this morning she's had

1 handful of cashew nuts
1 wholemeal Pitta with hummus
1 pear
1 banana
1 bowl of fruit and fibre
Toast with marmite

Next she'll have a cheese sanwich with cucumber chunks,raisins,yoghurt...

Then she goes to pre school and continues to scoff fruit, crackers etc....

Thankyou, some great ideas here think I just need to keep a list of ideas in the kitchen so I don't get stuck. I never remember anything when I need to!
DS is 3. He's been fairly faddy til now but seems to be pushing through it at the moment in his bid to eat anything he can get his hands on!

Ds has just turned 11 and in the last 2 weeks he has been eating me out of house and home. I have increased the carbohydrates , so he is having huge bowl of breakfast cereal followed by crumpet . Has smallish packed lunch but then getting him to eat lunch has always been a struggle. This week he has had hot cross buns as a snack when home from school, followed by huge dinner and a bedtime snack.
Is this the start of teenage years early? Grin Hmm

As long as your DCs are old enough not to choke dramatically, pop corn is great for being super-cheap, relatively healthy and fun. I always offer it when trying to ingratiate myself with fussy children!

Scones with butter and jam or cheese scones are a good option.
