Frozen food over the 'month in freezer' rule - to eat or not to eat?!

So I've got some salmon fillets, sausages and fish cakes which have been frozen since October! What do you reckon- ok to eat or mental to consider!?!

Totally fine. Who says they should be used within a month?Once stuff is in the freezer, assuming it was good when it went in, no power cuts etc, then it doesn't become unsafe to eat, basically ever!

The texture and flavour may not be as great after a while, but there's no risk of food poisoning. And from October till now I doubt even the texture etc have been affected.

There's a 'month in freezer' rule? First I've heard... Definitely be ok!

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 19/01/2012 16:13

Absolutely fine!

What is the 'month in the freezer rule'? Never heard of it.

Same here Pootles - I've had stuff in for a couple or three years before...as longs as it's wrapped up well I haven't had any problems.

Ah- I love you ladies, I'm not mingling after all! The 'rule' is basically the small print on the back of freezing instructions, have a look, it always says 'use within one month' which I've always questioned with same thought as you muminscotland. Now, ha! I shall ignore it and save myself over £10!

Thank you chick chicks!

the one month rule is invented by themselves so you'll chuck out said good food and buy more.. Definitely eat the stuff you have.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 19/01/2012 17:15

I have things in my freezer that are 2 years old and they are fine to eat, ignore.

doradoo · 19/01/2012 17:26

I thought the 'use within one month' advice was for fridges with a freezer thingy at the top and not for a 'deep freeze' - doesn't it depend on the number of snowflakes or something?

That said there's plenty in my freezer that's way over a year old and I'd eat it no questions asked!

AmberLeaf · 19/01/2012 17:29

First ive heard of it!

Eat it you'll be fine!

sandyballs · 19/01/2012 17:30

So glad you asked this, was going to post the same thing. I've got salmon in freezer from august. Thought the month thing on back was weird

COCKadoodledooo · 19/01/2012 17:37

Totally fine.

And if you buy the meat from a butcher there's no pesky label to worry about Wink

IWantMyHatBack · 19/01/2012 17:40

As long as you've got a proper freezer it's fine. If you've got one of those tiny freezer compartments in your fridge them a month would be about right.
