a turnip
and then another turnip, with sugar and some sort of soya cream.

HTH

Dinner - any basic meat and veg works really. Just check every ingredient - they put gluten in some really wierd stuff. Something like roast dinner, or steak, or anything really! You can get gluten free pasta, and flour v easily, so you should be able to make any sauces yourself.

Pudding - bit more difficult. Avoid baking, it's really different if you can't use gluten. I quite often do meringue based puddings, but obviously you wouldn't be able to use cream.

dustyhousewithdustypeople · 18/01/2012 13:39

I was that for a while, really difficult..

Veggie curry/risotto for main? Roulade for pudding, or cheesecake made with gluten-free biscuits?

CMOTDibbler · 18/01/2012 13:39

Butternut squash, leek and sage risotto, followed by chocolate brownies made with Doves farm gf flour (use dairy free marg and dark choc)

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/01/2012 13:40

I'm a vegetarian, but that combination is very tricky!

I think you need to look at vegan recipes rather than vegetarian, although you don't say whether your guest eats eggs. Is this site any good?

www.veganvillage.co.uk/recipes/mains.htm

FannyPriceless · 18/01/2012 13:42

I like the turnip suggestion.

But then again you could try roast veg (carrots, peppers, red onion, sweet potatoes, parsnip) served with herby cous cous. Then a fruit sorbet with fresh berries?

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/01/2012 13:46

Doesn't couscous contain wheat?

Coca · 18/01/2012 13:47

I searched here for Gluten free and then narrowed it down to dairy free and vegetarian

HipHopOpotomus · 18/01/2012 13:47

I'd be thinking Mexican - corn tortillas, rice, beans, avocado, olives, peppers, tomatoes, salad etc with cheese/sour cream optional. Can easily be vegan too if required.

Coca · 18/01/2012 13:48

Maybe the stuffed caggage leaves followed by the raspberry slush?

Pootles2010 · 18/01/2012 13:50

Oh i just saw vegetarian bit.... Sorry Blush Veggie curry?

ppeatfruit · 18/01/2012 14:03

Yup AKiss cous cous IS wheat !! fanny could serve polenta instead. That's great for gluten frees you can make it thick and then grill it and then have you're baked veggies with it I often make a tahini sauce as well and or you can fry some tofu with soya sauce, garlic and olive oil. .Iam a bit like yr guest but eat fish though (some vegetarians do and some don't ) It's an idea to ask 'cos him or her googly.

FannyPriceless · 18/01/2012 14:08

How thick am I? Warning to all wheat-free types not to come to dinner at my house!Grin

Pannacotta · 18/01/2012 14:13

How about melanzane, basically slices of aubergine baked in rich tomato sauce with lots of cheese on top (think dairy free on top of veggie and gluten/wheat free is a bit heavy going). You could serve this with home made oven chips or sweet potato chips.

Pudding could be ice cream, choc sauce and berries.

How important is the dairy free?

iwouldgoouttonight · 18/01/2012 14:15

I am vegetarian and gluten/wheat free too. I am a nightmare to cook for Grin

Some ideas:

Chilli with rice (use lots of beans in the chilli instead of meat - or you use soya mince - Granose Soya Mince is gluten free, some of the Quorn mince, etc isn't)

Veg and paneer curry with rice

Chickpea and spinach curry

Roasted veg and halloumi

Spicy mixed bean casserole topped with sweet potato mash

Paella

Roasted butternut squash and feta risotto

Or you could buy some of the Free From pastas and do:
Pasta with pesto and cashew nuts
Lasagne - make a lentil sauce instead of a meat sauce
Spaghetti bolognese (use soya mince again)

You can use tofu instead of meat, although I've never got on with it.

Puddings:
Pavlova or any meringue based things
Brownies work well with gluten free flour
Fruit and ice cream (check the ingredients as some have gluten in)

Mumptious · 18/01/2012 14:18

You can make fab dairy-free rice pudding with rice, sugar and coconut milk... I made it for a friend's coeliac son and it was really really fab. The gluten-free pasta is very good these days so what about a really tasty pasta sauce (slow cooked tomato and pepper with some chill and basil) a nice green salad and coconut rice pudding with chopped pistachios on top! Or Nigella's cornbread topped veggie chilli is also fab. Let me know if you need recipes!

iwouldgoouttonight · 18/01/2012 14:19

My mum (also gluten free) makes a lovely almond cake (just google almond cake) which uses ground almonds instead of flour.

ppeatfruit · 18/01/2012 14:33

Iwouldgo i think that googly's guest is also ideally dairy free! Grin

iwouldgoouttonight · 18/01/2012 14:50

Damn it. Must read things properly before typing! Grin

Ignore any of my suggestions which involve cheese/ice cream.

tabulahrasa · 18/01/2012 14:57

Salad and fruit salad?

Gipfeli · 18/01/2012 15:01

Gluten free desserts - make sure you use gluten-free baking powder.

Bitter chocolate almond torte

Nigella?s clementine cake

Lemon, polenta and almond cake

River Café?s Chocolate Nemesis

Wow - thanks All Grin. My friend knows how difficult it is to cook for her so she isn't so worried about the dairy for one evening, though I will try to limit it. She doesn't eat fish and I think she's fine with eggs, though I'll check! So far I am thinking either Butternut squash risotto or Aubergine parmigiana followed by Almond cake (maybe with raspberry coulis?) :). Are rice/ potatoes okay or not? [clueless]

HipHopOpotomus · 18/01/2012 22:48

Rice and pots are fine Grin

ppeatfruit · 19/01/2012 11:03

well Googly If your guest is on her blood type diet like me then it depends on what blood type she is (just to complicate things a bit more for you) Grin

I don't eat potatoes or tomatoes (they're members of the deadly nightshade family of veggies which a lot of people are allergic to) But I eat rice preferably organic whole rice (Oh dear no wonder I have to take my own food when I go to friends for dinner !!)
