After watching This Morning last week I was looking for some alternative healthier snacks for dd who is 3.

She eats fruit, raisin, fromage frais and just now cheese straws etc

But after the report that cheese straws are half fat and cereal bars are half sugar I was looking for other ideas!!

How does your Dd eat at mealtimes ? My Dd eats well & rarely has snacks - although she is partial to the odd apple &/or banana.

She's never snacked - should I expect her to ?

Raisins are teeth rotters, so I would stick to the fruit snack, perhaps with a thin slice of (organic) mild chedder ? perhaps a slice of toast ?

she eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with a snck in between - she needs them she is always starving and I like to give her treats (she thinks these things are as much of a treat as chocolate etc.)

give ordinary cheese rather than cheese straws - toddlers need quite a bit of fat in their diets and you could make your own flapjack type things instead of cereal bars.Also maybe veggie crudites or breadsticks with some kind of dip, hoummous etc.

she would enjoy the breadstick and dip idea - she is quite an adveturous eater - I was thinking of keeping a week box of normal cheese cut into shapes in the fridge.

How would I make the flapjacks I'm a rubbish cook - dont know many recipies

M + S do lovely apple crisps which are just apples and oil. I buy cereal bars with no added sugar for ds, you can get them from Holand and Barrett or the Organix ones are good too. Holland and Barrett also sell a very healthy organic malt loaf.

How about oat cakes, most children like those? I also think things like cinnamon bagels, hot cross buns etc are a reasonably healthy sweet treat.

my DD had tsatsiki dip with cucumber & carrot sticks with her lunch yesterday (quiche) - that went down well Tsatsiki is a combo of greek yogurt/cucumber/mint - (bought from Tescos). Homous would be just as good with veggie slices to dip in.

Nairns do lots of sorts of oatcakes now. Some plain, some with dried fruit and some with berries. They're great.

Rice or corn cakes are nice, especially with a banana mushed on top or some peanut butter.
My kids love raw carrots and celery. These can be dipped in humous.

Nuts. Dried Apricots (the brown ones without sulphur taste much nicer than the orange ones.

Some biscuits are better than others. Fig rolls and garibaldies are less sugary.

It's a good idea to browse around your health food shop.

DS loves rice cakes, a slice of toast with some houmous to dip it in, nuts (including pine nuts), dried fruit and all sorts of seeds. I wish I could get him to eat fresh fruit and veg as a snack, but he avoids it like the plague!
