Nigella's chocolate loaf cake-clingfilm does melt goddamit!!!

Have followed her recipe to the letter which included lining the tin with two layers of clingfilm despite my doubts. "don't worry it won't melt!" says she!

Well it bloody looks like it has melted. That means the cake is ruined doesn't it? I have to wait till it's completely
Cold before removing from tin but there is no sign of any clingfilm which presumably means it's now part of the cake!!!!

Oh dear Shock this brings back happy memories of my Mum letting the christmas pudding boil dry and melting the plastic pudding basin. HmmGrin

I do think clingfilm was a bit risky, which book is it from? I like her quadruple choc loaf from Feast.

TheGoddessBlossom · 14/01/2012 08:50

From Feast. And my copy definitely mentions clingfilm. Have read it and reread it and showed DH. I think I must have a misprint.

She even says in it "Don't panic it won't melt!"

How weird! I have just had a look in my 'feast', it suggests lining the tin with greased foil.
I always use baking paper, because in my experience foil always sticks and you end up having to peel littel bits of foil off the cake. Hmm

Clingfilm goes a bit gooey if you use it in the microwave! Shock

You could just slice the plasticky edges off?

Bunbaker · 14/01/2012 12:25

"You could just slice the plasticky edges off?"

I would be worried about the toxins in clingfilm. I have heard that Nigella's books aren't always proofread correctly and often have mistakes in. I would be inclined to use baking parchment instead as it truly is non stick (and doesn't melt)

chipmunksex · 14/01/2012 12:27

Aha!
Here's your answer you are not the first to have this problem. Did you eat it anyway?

TheGoddessBlossom · 14/01/2012 18:12

The cake was totally ruined, the clingfilm had merged into the cake, and burnt, you could smell it. Chipmunk thanks so much for finding that article, it's been driving me mad today, thinking I had a rogue edition! Grin Resorted to a Hugh FW sponge victoria sponge with jam and cream instead. Yumble.

What happened is, Nigella uses posh clingfilm and didn't realise when she wrote the book, that normal non-premium clingfilm does melt. It's not a typo, it's just the author living on Planet Stinking Rich.

TheGoddessBlossom · 14/01/2012 19:07

ElderberrySyrup you are bang on. My friend texted me as much last night - "do you get your clingfilm in Harrods? Cos that's where Nigella gets hers....."

Mine said cling film too, nbut I didn't believe it. I make the cake all the time using greaseproof paper. And it's lovely without the chocolate syrup bit too- different but still lovely.

Jamie uses cling film to wrap beans when he's baking pastry blind too. Must be one of those rich people things!

yes its a typo. I remember reading this ages ago and there should be an omission on her website.
