Chicken pie question URGENT

winnybella · 10/01/2012 17:08

I'm making chicken and leek pie, but haven't got enough of it to fill the dish. Can I add some ham to it? I only have sliced ham-would that be good enough?
Also what other veg can I add? Have got peas, broccoli...hmm, that's it. Potatoes. No carrot.

Thanks Smile

yes you can add ham/bacon/sweetcorn. You could add brocolli but cook lightly first.

Bunbaker · 10/01/2012 17:13

They all sound good to me. Have you any mushrooms?

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 10/01/2012 17:20

Add any veg you have

Methe · 10/01/2012 17:21

You can add whatever you like!

mrspnut · 10/01/2012 17:23

I usually make chicken, leek, ham and sweetcorn when I make a pie.

winnybella · 10/01/2012 17:25

Thank you.

No, no mushrooms sadly. Ok, so ham goes in. DP detests sweetcorn, so no, although it sounds good.

Will peas do?

Chuck them in - my DD2 won't eat peas so we hardly use them.

Methe · 10/01/2012 17:29

Peas would be lush :) we out peas in everything!

winnybella · 10/01/2012 17:41

Ok, great.

It looks yummy now, but there's still half an inch left from the filling to the top of the dish. Do I lower the pasrty so it touches it or rather drape it toutly (is that an oxymoron?) over the top of the dish?

Argh. It's my first ever pie and it needs to be better than MIL's

Help! Can I leave some space between filling and pastry or not?

OP posts:
pinkhebe · 10/01/2012 17:46

there's always space of about that amount in my pie, stops it spilling over

hellhasnofury · 10/01/2012 17:47

A space will be fine.

winnybella · 10/01/2012 17:49

Phew. Thanks.

How was it?

winnybella · 10/01/2012 22:24

It was lovely Smile Even DS, who hates leeks, ate it all and asked for seconds.

I did find the draping pastry and adding the bits on the sides quite fiddly, though.

I'm a reasonable cook but not good (confident) with pastry. Afraid of the crimping or not sure how to get it to stick to the pie dish. Just after Christmas I made Jamies turkey and leek pie. It required puff pastry shop bought:-). In the method Jamie simply laid the pastry directly on top of the filling and tucking any excess under. Not sure if this would work with shortcrust pastry but worked brilliantly with puff.

I'll definitely be making again.
