Do you make cakes/cookies/treats etc instead of getting shop-bought stuff? If so can you inspire me with ideas?!

This is something I'd like to do a lot more, I was just looking at my shopping and realising how much is taken up by "snack" stuff - crackers, choc biscs, cereal bars, flap jacks etc.
I've just got a new food mixer so am good to go - what can I make that will last a wee while in a tupperware? Without us all becoming very porky overnight?!!
I got a nice banana loaf recipe from the BLW site and it went down a treat with everyone, was thinking things like that, oat cookies etc.
TIA!

yes to Be-ro cook book, I bought one for someone last year for about £2.50. It is my baking bible. I use their scotch pancake ( dropped scone) recipe with a dollop of golden syrup added, the DCs will eat them as fast as I can cook them. Don't like the be-ro brownies though, not chocolatey enough.

Google Be-Ro cookbook, you get it straight from the company, not shops.

i got mine beside the flour in Morrisons! I'm not sure if they've gone back to it being through the post/website like it used to be?

not tried the be-ro brownies, the 'never fail' ones in the mumsnet recipe section are great though!

flapjacks, oat biscuits of all sorts, savoury ham and olive cakes and muffins, daire free banana and carrot cake, herman (the friendship cake - you can cook a baking tray of it at a time and it freezes really well), cupcakes also frreze well and you can make mini ones to just pop into your mouth!

but also as a healthy snack my girls love a small bowl of frozen peas! no baking involved, cheap and very healthy! they are sweet and crunchy but warm quickly like little ice lollies. try it, you'll be surprised. the garden peas work well but petit pois peas too. my girls called them sweets for ages!! Sweetcorn on the otherhand is horrendous frozen! lol! :)

Oats, bananas, chopped dates. Mix together and bake. Hey presto healthy cookies!

Just googled ham and olive cake and these ones actually do look quite scrummy . I think I may have to try them.

Do you live in the North Jaggy? I'm on the South coast, I've never seen Be-Ro flour or the book in the supermarkets, I know about it from my Yorkshire Granny. I've had my current copy for about 10 years, in fact it's falling to pieces so I might buy another one soon and put it away for posterity (with my first ever copy, it's interesting to compare them).

Another favourite baking book is this one Muffins Fast and Fantastic. There was a similar thread last year and lots of people agreed it was an excellent book.

yes, in Scotland whoknows.

i saw them in shops a few years ago, not paid enough attention to see if they're still there now. the one i had before (and lost) was from sending off to the address on the flour bag. :)

I have that muffin book! it's brilliant; has some savoury recipes, ideas to adapt for what you have and some gluten free recipipes too. I often reccommend it to people.

Shoutymomma · 20/01/2012 22:12

Shoutymomma · 20/01/2012 22:18

No way man... the kids love it! Mind you, we have a pile of cutters. They make great stocking fillers.
