Help with ideas to satisfy my Umami craving in Pregnancy

joymaker · 10/01/2012 13:28

I am 14 wks pregnant and finally caved in and had an instant noodle with soup base lunch (bought at a chinese supermarket) even though the additives listed in the ingredients seemed eye-watering Blush

I was having marmite a lot but it's not fully doing it for me now.

Can anyone help me with more healthy/natural alternatives, which can be produced quickly/easily.

Thank you

Ketchup, mushrooms, gnocchi with tomato sauce, could you buy just the seaweed and make your own chinesey things? Teensy bit of strong cheddar?

stinkingb thanks for your ideas I'm off mushrooms also in the main garlic -the smell of it raw or for instance in humous make me nauseous (although their must have been a bit in that soup base which was fine Hmm)

DG was given a tube of umami flavouring paste at xmas, it seems to be a concentrated mixture of all the most umami foods mixed together. Haven't tried it yet am planning to add it to pasta sauces soups etc.

Have you tried Twiglets? Concentrated marmite flavour, but with added crunchiness Grin

Japanese rice crackers? Miso soup?

Bramshott · 10/01/2012 14:02

Also you can put seaweed in bread, porridge etc, rather yum...or make Welsh laverbread.

Have you tried nutritional yeast? It's a flaky condiment in a big tub from health food shops. It's super healthy (lots of B vits) and tasty in a marmitey way. We sprinkle it on everything!

The paste can be found next to sun dried tomato paste in the tomatoes section. How about bolognaise with lots of Parmesan?

add tinned/jar of anchovies to meat things eg shepherds pie /spag bol - its especially good with lamb.... good oils as well....also olives
brilliant in ceaser salad dressing too....which is good on green veg as well as salad..
if you're worried about salt intake you can rinse them - reduces the hit slightly
also if you can eat fresh then go for it- I couldn't eat fresh oily fish in pg ...Sad

worcester (sp?) sauce also good for instant hit in scrambled egg/beans etc

also smoked paprika has something of the similar hit .....my thing was thai food but also umami- if its salt try switching to good rock salt use far less for better flavour....

It was a present handed over in a bit of a scrum, not even sure who it was from, looks like the kind of thing you get in posh delis.

MrsWifty · 10/01/2012 21:31

I saw the umami paste in Co Op last week - as Zim said, next to the tomato purée.

joymaker · 11/01/2012 11:03

Oh thank you everone so many things to now try Smile Smile Smile

3rdnparty funny you shold mention anchovies, I was devouring copious amounts from the deli (as well as pickled herring) before I found out I was pregnant again Grin

I've got the paste too & just use it to add flavour to soups/stews but there are recipes at www.laurasanttini.com/umami.html
