Anyone done baked potatoes in a slow cooker?

Just say a "recipe" which says to bake them in foil on low for 7/8 hours after rubbing with oil and salt. Has anyone done this? The recipe is for four potatoes but there are six of us. Do all the potatoes have to touch the edge of the slow cooker because I won't fit six in without piling them up!

Have never done baked spuds in mine.
Interested to hear the replies. I have a whole chicken in mine as we speak.

ooh never thought of doing that , sounds good. I do potatoes in mine diced up in a casserole. Should imagine they would be fine piled up as they will all steam.

there was a thread on here a while back. i did it once - not great success - they were edible, but not as nice as those in micro/oven. would only do again if this was my only means of cooking

chipmonkey · 09/01/2012 18:35

Thanks, dreaming. Were they harder and less fluffy than if you did them in the oven?

didn't like the skin - it was dark coloured and more chewy - inside wasn't much different to oven.

How long did they go in for?

if you search you might find a thread on here. i think it was all day.

Mine are baking as we speak. I have set it to cook for 8 hours. Will let you know!

Right, well they were edible!Grin but not as nice as when I do them in the regular oven, I found them quite waxy when done in the slow cooker, rather than floury like when done in the oven. Having said that, my slow cooker has a split bowl so that you can do two different dishes, one in each side. When I go back to work, I will be doing the potatoes like that alongside a casserole or whole chicken, as I don't have time to put potatoes on to bake when I get home.

chopmonkey - couldn't you microwave till soft - 10 mins ish and then finish in oven on 200 for 20/30 mins? Pretty quick still and they taste so much nicer.

dreaming, I get home quite late in the evenings when I'm working and one of the evenings, I am not home till 9.00 so am depending on dh to dish up dinner for the boys. I can't see him baking the potatoes like that and he has been known to dish up chicken and ketchup when I'm not there to moan at him!

chipmondky - one of my lazy potatoes is to cut into wedges (don't peel), drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with paprika (doesn't taste very strong) and cook in oven. i usually make double quantities and redheat batch next day.

perhaps we ought to start a cutting corners cooking thread?!
