Online Shopping - Who's the best?

Due to LO arriving 3 weeks ago, I want to start online shopping (tried once or twice in the past but not 'committed')

Who's the best? I want to be able to do a week's shop for me and DH for under £70, inc. delivery, but won't count household goods into that (cleaning products, loo roll etc) as I tend to buy these in bulk every two months. Would like it to include a bottle of Rose though.

Went to one of the Big Four (ahem) the other day and got a small amount of 'basics'...nowhere near a week's worth, and it came to £55!!!

Fwiw, breakfast is usually just toast, but I like to have a nice dinner each evening. Lunches tend to be leftovers / sandwiches etc. I have a slow cooker, but haven't used it yet, and am no Deliah!

What I would like, is to be able to make a lovely dinner each evening for DH coming in from work, but it not cost the earth.

Help me become more domesticated, please Grin

I've always rated Sainsburys delivery. There were very good for me, not too many substitutions, rarely late and if they were they give you a £10 voucher, not just a delivery charge refund, but they've lost me as a customer recently because they put their midweek delivery charges up from £3.50 to £5.99 Shock. We now use Ocado because they were doing an offer on their delivery passes and I got a 6 month one for £2.99 a month. Don't think I'll renew with them to be honest unless they do another offer. Brilliant app though (on Android and iphone/ipad).

Waitrose are the loveliest, drivers always bring the shopping in to the kitchen (everyone else dumps at the front door without even asking if I want it bringing in) and it's free if you spend £50 or more. But being Waitrose it's not that cheap, and as it comes from their local store it helps if your nearest store is a decent sized one so you don't get too many substitutions.

I've tried Tesco a couple of times... ok website, good to collect the points of course for points swaps etc. Plus their iphone app is good. But I'm not that keen on their products to be honest. Never seemed to be that good quality and their delivery charges tend to be around the £4.99 mark too (I usually go for a Tuesday morning delivery but never seem to get a cheap deal for what I would have thought was a pretty low demand time)

mysupermarket.co.uk/ is brilliant as it allows you to compare your shopping basket in tesco, sainsburys, ocado and asda, allowing you to switch between them at anytime.

Best thing is, it points out the better deals as sometimes it's cheaper to buy for example two six-packs rather than a single twelve-pack, or suggests swapping to a different brand for the same product and so you can save more.

Once you're done, the website sends your basket to the supermarket where you select your delivery slot and pay - that's a bit of an extra faff but on the whole I save much more like that.

I've used Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda.

Sainsburys were my favourite, probably due to product choices and familiarity. Tesco were fine. We use Asda now only because they're the only supermarket to deliver to where we live. They're okay. Fruit and veg are usually fresh. I've sent a couple of refrigerated items back recently because shelf life was just a couple of days which I think is poor. My main gripe is that they frequently arrive outside of my delivery slot, usually early and usually when I'm just putting my coat on to go and collect children! But that's minor. They do a price guarantee promise and between Sept and Christmas I had £62 gathered up in vouchers which I took off my Christmas shop. I got around £3 back last week and £4.30 on yesterday's shop - it all helps!

Bangtastic · 06/01/2012 22:35

I use Asda, never had any issues really. Shelf life on a few vegetable things this time have been bad (baking potatoes expiring the day before delivery?!) but it has never happened before so I won't tear any poor souls in customer service a new arsehole just yet Wink Often get free delivery vouches in my inbox too!

Millie1 · 06/01/2012 22:56

Ooh, I haven't had any of those Bangtastic ... any tips on how to sign up?

Bangtastic · 06/01/2012 22:58

I have absolutely no idea how to sign up... I just started getting offers emails from them when I signed up to it and now and again there is a free delivery one! Sorry I can't be more help - maybe email them and ask if they could send some your way as a loyal customer Wink

Sorry havent been back, settling in with LO after DH has gone back to work.

Well, I ordered from Tesco, they sent me a text the night before to reduce the 'slot time' from two hours down to one, which was great, and only two things arrived with a short shelf life, but both were for DHs lunches this week and would have been used within the time anyways. No subs. Good price too.

Will try that MoneySupermarket thing next week though!

I have no brand loyalty at the moment, just picked Tesco as their website seemed the easiest to use.

I've switched to Abel and Cole. I can get a fairly large box of fruit and veg, a large chicken, milk, bread, pork steaks and fish for £40. I can't go OTT with the shopping as they don't actually sell a lot of rubbish. I can get you a free veg & fruit box if you want to try them out (they will give me one also but I'm not fussed about this).

I've flitted between Tesco & Sainsburys but tend to lean towards Tesco as it was the most consistent... So I knew what I can and can't rely on. I think it often depends on the store they pick from. The local tescos is one of their biggest & busiest stores so has a large range and is well stocked. Our local Sainsbury's is quite small and less well stocked & the delivery's always seemed to have lots of substitutions.
Tescos has also got better at substituting more appropriately the longer I've been a customer ( I'm guessing they profile your history)
I don't buy bread from them (local bakery), and large joints I buy from the butcher otherwise most of my main shop comes from there. Value - as long as you don't fall for their abysmal 'offers' it's ok. Quality - most things are fair, except fresh bread which is rubbish. Choice (our store/delivery area)- not bad range of cheap, middle & higher end products & lots of brands & even some local ones.

I've used Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Ocado.

Sainsbury's - utter crap. Most stuff not delivered as "out of stock" even though available on website!!! Customer services could be arsed and were just plain rude.

Ocado - never a problem with them. Happy to refund on items substituted and not wanted, breakages/crushed items (if that occurred).

Waitrose - excellent. Just started using them as they have a blanket free delivery on orders over £50.
