Talk falafel to me!

I love falafel, food of the gods!

For ease and cheapness have been using a dried mix Al Fez from tesco is cheapest but a bit weird tasting. Grasnose was v nice but not much in there.

Should I make my own, and of so what recipe is best?

I make my own -

drained can of chick peas, chopped red onion - up to you how much you put in, tons of fresh coriander and parsley, squirt of lemon, garlic - I use a squirt from a tube. I use a stick blender to combine it all.

I roll small balls in flour and then flatten slightly and shallow fry in olive oil, but any oil would do.

Serve with salad and big dollop of natural yoghurt in pitta bread.

It takes about 5 minutes to make, so very easy and quick!

Falafel is a bit of a store-cupboard standby meal here, so I tend to use the dried mixes, but find they are much improved by the addition of some grated carrot/courgette/apple (and fresh herbs too, if you have them).

ooh apple, nice idea!

can you oven cook so you don't need to use as much oil? Thinking health conscious!

I use this recipe m.goodfoodchannel.co.uk/recipe/513294/chickpea-falafel/ bit of a faff, as you've to soak the chickpeas the night before, and I tend to put in lots of herbs and spices. Yum.

Oh sorry, just saw your comment about the oil, maybe this recipe isn't ideal! (it is good though!)

I have made them before and found them a bit dry.
The Waitrose ones have chopped apricots in them and this seems to moisten them up a bit - worth a try?

valiumredhead · 10/01/2012 11:11

Adding lemon stops the dryness ime.

I do them in the slow cooker, using this
