Ceramic Mixing Bowls - yes or no?

DD accidentally broke one of my old, old melamine mixing bowls so DH (or DD, depends how you want to look at it!) gave me these as part of my Christmas present. They're really securely wrapped and I'm loathe to open them incase they need to be exchanged. Am sure they're gorgeous but will they be completely impractical for baking? Heavy, how will they handle a mixer battering away at them and if one gets dropped and shatters will it take a chunk out of my tiles!??

So, ceramic mixing bowl owners - good or bad buy? Xmas Grin

Ceramic bowls are lovely. I bought one, and dropped it, and now haveno bowl and a shattered floor tile.

I will buy another though. Because they are what grown ups have.

well i think they are gorgeous so if i get you a set of melamine ones from somewhere can we swap?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 28/12/2011 16:35

I would imagine they would mark from the metal blades of a mixer but they are still more gorgeous than plastic ones an this worth it.

Things that are used should be a little battle scarred.

Lynette - that's my fear!
Catsmama ... yes! ... Maybe!
I like the sound of the angled side, MrsM and DoesntChristmas I don't mind battle scarred bowls but I will mind a battle scarred floor!

Need to think about this. Had a look for melamine bowls before Xmas but couldn't see any and these do look lovely!

Mine are too heavy, can't go in dishwasher and have grey marks from the electric hand whisk. They tend to sit in the cupboard while I use a tesco plastic bowl

I have the Mason Cash type in pale blue and love them - they double up as salad bowls/ for crisps too.

hermioneweasley · 29/12/2011 13:10

Ceramic/ earthenware bowls are best for baking as they keep a steady temperature

iklboonkey · 29/12/2011 13:27

Love my ceramic/earthenware bowls and all the cakes I've made since getting them have been better. I don't use electric whisks or mixers so I'm not worried about marks. They are quite heavy though. You can wash them with soapy water rather than a dishwasher.

LePruneDeMaTante · 29/12/2011 13:27

I have something similar and use them every day!

GlaikitFizzEggNog · 29/12/2011 13:31

Can you remember dropping your melamine bowl recently? I'd guess you dont go arounf flinging your bowls on the floor!! I have creamic ones similary to yours and love them.

missmartha · 29/12/2011 13:34

Ceramic bowls are brilliant. Couldn't be doing with anything else.

If you mark the inside with metal, from a whisk, fork or anything else metal, use metal polish like Brasso to clean it off.

Wash in hot soapy water before you use it again obviously. But it's dead easy to keep ceramic bowls clean.

Oh, didn't realise there were more posts - thanks!! Eh, yep I have dropped my melamine bowl of late Blush. Have been toying with returning them but it seems like so much hassle! So they might stay!

they are lovely and on the basis that they were a gift you should certainly keep them. I have never (to date!) dropped any of my ceramic bowls, so not really a risk I don't think.
