We are having friends up to ours for a new years eve gathering and I wanted to prepare some canapés. I'm currently staying with my parents and will arrive home on the 30th. I'm also ill so lacking in energy and creativity but hoping I'll be feeling better in time! Any suggestions appreciated!:)

Some good ideas here

Although if you are not well then you really should ask your guests to bring a plate each - that is what we are doing.

Thanks Five love M&S canapés but have been really looking forward to cooking so if I'm well enough I'm keen to so that.

Thanks Basted. I will take a look. A couple of people have offered to bring some bits so I may ask them to do that. At least that way you know that everyone will like something as well I guess.

Quail's eggs? Take 2 mins to cook - little bowl of salt and celery salt to dip them in?
Parmesan and rosemary biscuits? Grate parmesan - add a bit of flour - a couple of desert spoons full - and snip fresh rosemary into them. Bake on greasproof paper on a baking sheet for 5 mins or so then cool - like little parmesan crisps. Both really easy.

Oh and make the guests peel the eggs themselves. Takes time and creates conversation about how fiddly the buggers are.

another good one is if you make the Hugh F-W pikelets and serve them with smoked salmon/ sour cream and chopped chives. You can just do a pile of them and serve them so people can do their own. Some people like chopped onion/crumbled egg, some people like a bit of caviar and a little twist of lemon. Anyway, they are great fun and cheap to make, will keep in a plastic bag overnight and reheat in microwave, toaster or oven, and if they don't get eaten are lovely with nutella or marmite for breakfast! Just a thought... recipe is on the guardian website.
