Boiling a can of condensed milk

OK, so here's the scene - I get out my banoffee pie recipe, I put my can of condensed milk in the saucepan to boil, the doorbell rings and it's the girl next door looking for a recipe for mushroom stroganoff. "Oh, I have one in this recipe book here", say I, and lend her the book that the banoffee pie recipe is in.

Fast forward a couple of hours and I can't remember how long I have to boil my can of milk for. "I know", thinks I, "I'll pop round to see if she's finished with my book yet" ... just as I see her driving off in her car.

So, I turn to MN ... someone must know whether it's three or four hours I need to boil the can for? Mustn't they?

Please?

I know it's boring, I know it can't compete with some of the other threads here today, but I really need to know - the three hours is up and I don't want to ruin my pudding!

isn't it about 2 hours

I usually do it for 3 and a half hours, but I also know you can't Overcook it. So if you leave it for four hours it will be fine, even if it would have been done at 3. iyswim.

Oh thanks - if you can't overcook it then that's OK.

The recipe definitely said either three or four hours, but I can't remember which - and I can't remember whether it was due to come off the hob at 2 or 3 o'clock ... my brains didn't get out of bed when I did this morning.

You can over cook them because I have a friend who exploded a can - it's a bgger to get off your kitchen ceiling apparently. Do not* let it boil dry whatever you do.

I ahve had an exploding can episode too! Had to re-paint the kitchen!!! Do not let it boil dry, but 3 hours should do it

Three and a half hours didn't do it - it's gone brown but it's still runny and I can't use it in the recipe.

Sod, bum, bugger.
