We are hosting boxing day for 9 adults and 2 children. We won't have any left overs as we are not at home for Christmas day. Have 2 vegetarians, one no wheat. Need to prepare things in advance and freeze or easy to do on the morning - and have a budget of £50 (not including drink)......help!!

Bumping as I'm in a similar situation and need inspiration too - I'm thinking maybe a boiled ham, but then I go blank after that!

Bumping again as I need ideas for no gluten buffet food

Selks · 15/12/2011 19:40

Home made vegetarian quiche - could be made crustless for gluten free
Veggie sausage rolls
Vegetarian pate
a terrine of some sort
Indian snacks such as bhajis and samosas
mince pies
christmas cake
chicken satay skewers
mini trifles
smoked salmon potato salad with watercress
cheese and chive coleslaw
houmous and pitta chips to dip

Thanks for those ideas - am looking to make as much as I can. If I made quiche would it freeze ok?

Quiches are never as good when they have been frozen, IMO.

I'd do a big dhal - can do a few days ahead and refrigerate - serve w pittas/flatbread and plenty of coriander and yoghurt.

I'd also do a ham - cook a few days before again.

Jacket potatoes, good bread, salady stuff, pickles and cheese.

Plus mince pies, tropical fruit salad.

I was going to start a thread about buffet ideas for the day after Boxing day actually as this is when fussy MIL descends! I have bought a ham but was wondering what to do with it.
Could you share your dhal recipe SantaffetaClaus please?

Sorry for thread hijack but might bump it for you janx Xmas Grin!

Hi - I had the M&S moroccan cous cous this week and it was yummy! This looks very similar. It looks Christmassy with the pomegranate in. The orange and minty dressing is very refreshing.

Definitely a big honey roast ham studded with cloves and glazed with brown sugar or a whole poached salmon. Potato salad, cheeses, rye and oat crackers for those who are gluten intolerant. Lots of leafy salads, maybe a rice or couscous dish.

Some less usual salads, like fennel, orange and mint or a tricolore with tomato mozarella and avocado would look pretty.

Trifle and Quality Street Christmas Cake for pudding. I sometimes do a boozy trifle for grownups and a booze free one for the children, but could just do the non-alco one for everyone.

Nigella's ham cooked in cherry coke is good.
