Ready made mashed potato

Ive got 10 people coming for Xmas dinner and am trying to make life as easy as possible, mainly because my kitchen is so tiny. Im doing roast potatoes but would like to have mashed as well and wondered whether anyone had tried the ready made versions from the supermarket. Do they taste OK? Has anyone got any recommendations for the nicest tasting - have Sainsburys/Asda/Waitrose/Tesco all nearby.

Sainsburys is ok, better than Smash. I add a bit of butter to the hot water before making it up, then stir in some creme fraiche and sprinkle toasted pine nuts on top.

Haven't tried the ready-made, but I do make mine in advance for Christmas and freeze it and it turns out very well.

That sounds like a plan BN - how do you reheat it? Microwave?

I've tried most and they're all vile

Aunt bessies is really nice. Don't bother with tesco or asda or morrosipns own. Get 4/5 adult portions from 1 bag

Yes, took it out of the freezer the day before, then reheated it in the microwave. It was so much less hassle than making it on the day.

Tesco finest do one that you just put in the micro. It was decicious, full of cream and butter though other wise I would never have home made again. Really was the nicest mash ever. Its not one of those add milk to a packet versions though. One pot served 2 people.

Waitrose one is not as nice as you think it would be.
M&S do a great one.

Make in advance and reheat!

It amazes me how much ready made mash costs!

storminabuttercup · 15/12/2011 21:46

That was advice btw not an order!

Co-op have a maris piper one which is surprisingly nice but enough to feed 10 would be very pricey.

I use the Tesco one a lot - not the Finest one, the ordinary one. It's nice on top of fish pie/cottage pie etc and saves washing up. I've given it out with sausage and mash to the family (who are foodies) and they couldn't tell the difference between it and homemade.
