Tesco smoked salmon - is it just me or is it vile?

And what do I do with it??

It's the 300g packet of 'Ready to Eat' Tesco smoked salmon, half-price at £6. To me, it seems over-thick and rubbery. My daughter's tried a bit on a bagel, and looked unenthusiastic. I'm finding it inedible. Is there any way of salvaging this?

I avoid buying bread, meat and fish at Tesco. Bad experiences.

Interesting I bought bread there yesterday as well and it's dry already (unlike the soapy salmon!)

ug yes, it's slimy, too thick and synthetic-tasting. I'd saved up vouchers and bought some as a treat and nearly cried when it was so vile.

Actually if I've got the receipt I may just take it back - which is unusal for me. What is the etiquette of returning opened unpleasant fish in a busy shop?

Imagine paying the full £12 for it, though. It was on offer at £6.

I'm not hugely into organic food but find that there is a world of difference between organic and non-organic smoked salmon.

I don't know quite why it is, but the organic stuff is melt-in-the-mouth delicate and everything else (even the spenny stuff) seems tougher and more stringy by comparison.

I don't understand why the Tesco slices need to be so think?

Thinner delicate slices - I do like the Asda organic, BeeBread - also seem to be pleasantly less slimy.

Cook with it. Even the nastiest cheapest smoked salmon I've bought usually tastes OK chopped up and then stirred into melted creme fraiche or Philadelphia as a sauce for pasta, or in risotto or scrambled eggs/omelette.

I've cut into into the thinnest slivers I can witb scissors, and DD managed a bit on a bagel. I'll omelette the rest. gastro, thanks for that tip.

I got a bloody email from Tesco yesterday promoting the damn stuff. They must have shelves heaving with it.

Black pepper and lemon juice helps,but I agree you shouldn't have to do it.

Well next week DD (15) and I are on the hunt for our perfect smoked salmon for Christmas, so any recommendations welcome, Clawdy!

We have a 'sinking fund' for some special things for Christmas, where money is no object. (Well, as long as it isn't truffles, IYSWIM>)
