Would you put pesto in a tart intended for a toddler group?

I wasn't told about any nut allergies, and wondering what to do.

Want to make some puff pastry tarts with pesto, tomato and feta. But pesto has nuts.

it's for a toddler group christmas party. WOuld it be inappropriate? I did make the same thing for a toddler group party last year and nothing was said, but not same toddler group, but was run my the same Surestart centre.

Shall i just remind them about the pesto? or make an alternative topping? Any other topping ideas that are popular with kids?

the pine nuts aren't THAT essential, make it with just olive oil and basil if you're worried

If you're worried you could make your own pesto - really easy to do- just leave out the nuts?

choceyes · 07/12/2011 15:13

I don't want to make my own pesto. I know it's easy to do, I've done it before but I can't be bothered with shopping for the ingrediants as I don't have time. Party is on Friday morning! Have a great big jar of Sacla pesto I was hoping to use up!

I'd make them, surely they'd have said if they wanted 'nut free' things?

Maybe put a little sign on them to say what they are?

choceyes · 07/12/2011 15:22

that's what I thought chipping. All the parents put down in a list what they would bring. Some said sandwiches and you can't guarantee that would be nut free either.

I'd say get a grip!! If you are worried about allergies then I'd leave out the feta and tomatoes too - as people can be allergic to those as; and then what about the pastry? There may be children who need gluten free.

Unless the nursery have a blanket no nut policy then just send them but tell the staff what is in it!

Very true starfishmummy! I shall make the tart I intended to make, and tell them what's in it Smile

FGS its got TWO ingredients if you leave out the nuts, can you really not get your hands on olive oil and basil over the next 48 hours? if not can you pass the task to someone else?

How about this tart instead....it's very easy and delicious.

My ds is nut allergic and i wouldn't let him eat anything at a toddler group party unless it came out of a packet and I could read the label. There is a much greater chance of having a child there with a milk or egg allergy so only cutting out one allergen is maybe a bit pointless. Parents of allergic dcs are used to dealing with this all the time.

SeasonsGripings · 07/12/2011 16:23

My dcs weren't allergic but also weren't allowed nuts till they were 5years old due to other allergies within the family...but the advice changes all the time.

Pine nuts are not nuts - they are seeds. My nut allergic DH eats them happily (by the handful!)

SeasonsGripings · 07/12/2011 23:22

We have a nut allergy in the family and I choose my pesto very carefully as it often contains cashews as well as pine nuts - not very authentic but very common.

AngelsfromtherealmsofgloryDog · 08/12/2011 23:21

Yes, pine nuts are seeds not nuts, but do check for cashew nuts in pesto as I've found them there before.

I agree that any parents of children with allergies will be checking everything they eat.

My 2 year old would love your pastries. :)
