soya mince versus quorn mince

I am trying to get away from using quite so many meat products and have realised that when making shepherds pie, bolognese etc, soya mince and quern mince taste just as nice.

But, which is best? From a health perspective and also from a financial perspective Smile.

TIA

imo from a taste perspective quorn is best. i'm not at all keen on frozen soya mince, and dehydrated soya always makes my cooking a bit soggy (and doesn't taste any better than the frozen). there was also one memorable occasion where i used dehydrated soya chunks which bore a striking resemblance to dog biscuits... yuk.

but quorn mince is great - tastes fine, good texture (although i haven't eaten meat since 1990, so i may not be the most qualified to comment) and not soggy. what a winner!

re finance - i have noticed that, in our local sainsburys at least, frozen quorn from the freezer is always much cheaper than 'fresh' quorn from the fridge (true for sausages too, fyi). this was even true when they had a really good offer on the 'fresh' stuff. in fact i walked the length of sainsburys to put the fresh back when i realised, offer or no offer!

If you're making shepherd's pie type food then IMO and E soya mince (not chunks!!) is brilliant it soaks up flavours very well (it needs a bit of soaking first before cooking) and takes very little time.
The thing I don't like about Quorn are the weird ingredients.

thanks both. ppeatfruit, which soya mince do you use? The frozen or the dried?

I use the dried organic soya mince (it's important to use organic soya because the american cheap stuff is heavily sprayed) the Belgian provomel is okay I buy it in health Food shops.

I would recommend tesco own brand vegetarian mince - I think it tastes much better than quorn and is often on offer so cheaper than quorn too.
No idea if it is healthier though!

Have to say I hate Quorn, the texture and taste, but only ever used it in spag bol. On the other hand I made a lovely chilli with soya mince (Holland & Barrat) and I love it, but I've only used it in chilli so not sure if that is a good comparision. But my vote is for soya mince (not chunks)..

thanks guys. I think I've heard good things about the Tesco one before so shall give that one a try as well as the dried organic.

I noticed nobody mentioned health.

Soy mince is the best, it's just soy protein.

Quorn and all other 'fake mince' have sugar and other crap in them👌
