Making a rainbow cake

I've split my mixture, used Dr Oetker gel colours as I read that traditional colourings would dilute it too much, but the colours are all pastel and not bright vivid colours like on here 1.bp.blogspot.com/-f7z49ihj3y0/TZBBi3armoI/AAAAAAAAAps/ZWZAM1HKY5E/s1600/Rainbow-birthday-Cake2.jpg and when it's cooked I presume the colours die down a bit too? How can I get really strong colours?

Help!

You need a lot of colouring to get a bright effect, far more than you would be happy to eat Grin

More like this?

valiumredhead · 30/11/2011 13:26

I really would not be happy to eat either of those cakes! Grin

I made my first rainbow cake last week for my mum's 70th. I used Wilton's food colouring gels, which I bought on Amazon (I think a lot of websites sell them though), and the colours were really bright and strong.

Yes it's more like that CF which I don't mind but its' not for me, it's for someone birthday, a Willy Wonka-esque theme, buttercreamed with lots of gaudy E number filled sweeties stuck all over it.

HG Wiltons.. will look them up, need to make the cake Friday though - the real cake, this is a tester, just as well I chose to do one!! - live in the arsehole of nowhere and no decorating shops and not sure I could get it sent in time.

WAHHH!

oh HG, did they know it was rainbow or a surprise till it was cut into? What was the reaction?

I've done it marbled for the tester, was toying with doing the real thing in whole colours for each layer but then it might not work on a small scale?

Look at this one. I think it's incredible.

AvadaKedavra · 30/11/2011 13:59

Yep that's my dilemma, don't know which effect to go for! They are both striking.

I've googled for Wilton, nowhere I can see can guarantee fast delivery, looked at some other types though and found one that is a professionals one that I am SURE I saw in Asda of all places last week so I am off for a wander down there while I wait for the butter to get to room temp Hmm 3hrs n still hard as a rock so far!!

Yep it was a surprise and there were a few 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' which was nice, plus no one had seen/heard of one before. It was definitely a talking point.

I did 6 sponges aiming for look of the Whisk Kid recipe thestringcheesemassacre links, but used Ms Marmite Lovers recipe. I think a normal sponge cake mixture would be better actually, but her frosting was easy and delicious.

Good luck finding what you need!

AvadaKedavra · 30/11/2011 16:07

Thanks :) and thank you for the link, am in need of a decent frosting recipe, have just done a bog standard buttercream on today's one but need something a little fancier for the real thing
