Just cracked a bad egg!

I always used to crack eggs one by one into a cup before adding to anything, (habit instilled in me by my mother who would also sniff each egg before tipping it from the cup into the mixing bowl), but had never had a bad egg so started just cracking them directly into the bowl. However... just cracked one into my cake mixture, and the smell!!! So disgusting! Luckily only making 12 cupcakes and it was the first egg added, so not too much to throw away.

I'll be going back to my old ways again after that experience!

It must be pretty rare these days with supermarket eggs - anyone else had a bad egg?

Pop eggs into a jug of cold water before cracking. If they float, they're bad. That method saves your nostrils.

My worst 'bad egg' experience was a swan's egg my delightful DS discovered floating on a lake. He smuggled it home then dropped it on the kitchen floor. Man, did it stink!

Once I had an egg that was a hard jelly like oval shape with something inside. It was very odd, the shell was filled with it so it was the same size and texture as a hard boiled egg, but grey/black with what I think was partially developed chick inside. It put me off eggs for a bit.

i must have cracked a hundred thousand eggs in my job over the years and i have honestly never come across a bad one.

This one was darker than usual inside and also must have been under pressure as when I cracked it, it sort of spurted out of the shell. It was so grim. Yuk.

Thanks for the floating in water tip, I'll remember that.

Anyway, cakes now made with good eggs and smelling nice as they cool!
