Cereal for supper?

BooBoosMumma · 27/11/2011 12:43

Did anyone else have cereal for supper when they were little? I can't be the only one??!! I'd have my tea at 4.30/5 ish, a bowl of cereal when Wogan started (7ish?) then it was bedtime.

My ds has just turned one and is now eating family meals with us, so there was me thinking 'cereal for supper ahoy' but when I asked my friends with similar aged children when they were planning to start giving their LO's cereal at supper time, their silence spoke volumes!!!

Did anyone else have cereal for supper? Does anyone give their kids cereal at supper time now???

Yup, still do on occasion :)

AstronomyDomine · 27/11/2011 12:46

Oh and yes it's a staple of DS's supper.

biological · 27/11/2011 12:55

Yup usually something like shreddies with warm milk a few times a week Smile

neepsntatties · 27/11/2011 13:00

We always had a biscuit but I like your supper better!

RecursiveMoon · 27/11/2011 13:31

DS has cereal for supper - either ReadyBrek or a Weetabix. He's 1 year 3 months old.

RecursiveMoon · 27/11/2011 13:32

Loving warm milk idea biological. I might try that with a Weetabix.

We got a chocolate biscuit, like a breakaway or a club, with a cup of milk.

JollySergeantJackrum · 27/11/2011 13:39

DP has this just about every night. He rarely eats at breakfast time though. I think he's very strange.

Dumpyandabdabs · 27/11/2011 18:54

warm milk on cornflakes is lush, but you have to eat them quite quick before they go soggy :)

GeorgeEliot · 27/11/2011 19:23

We are having chicken and leek pie with brussels sprouts for supper.

Family would think it rather strange if i put out cereal and milk.

TheFeministsWife · 27/11/2011 19:26

Yes we did, or tea and toast. DD1 has cereal for her supper, dd2 toast.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/11/2011 19:28

ds1 often has a bowl of cereal before bed

Himalaya · 27/11/2011 19:33

DH grew up in a dinner-tea-supper household and still eats cereal before bed most nights.

I grew up in a lunch-snack-dinner household and rarely eat cereal at night, apart from nights like tonight where we had 'Sunday Dinner' at 3pm.

The kids eat cereal before bed most nights, or toast. We go through q lot of cereal, and sometimes I've thought those "7 vitamins and iron" were 50% of their nutrient intake Grin

bruffin · 27/11/2011 20:32

DS 16 will eat cereal all day! I think its a teenage thing and he is too lazy to make anything else

Neuromantic · 27/11/2011 20:35

I was more likely to have cereal for supper than for breakfast as child. Still have it now for late night snacks.

dearprudence · 27/11/2011 20:38

DS loves it, but usually he has fruit and milk. If he's had a very early tea or he's particularly hungry, I occasionally let him have cereal.

purplepidjin · 27/11/2011 20:39

I've worked in residential settings and cereal is a staple of the supper menu, ditto cheese toasties Grin

mmmmmmmm cheese toastie at the end of a long shift

whimsicalname · 28/11/2011 16:50

i quite often give my boys, aged 7 and 5, cereal for supper. If we're not eating together, and they're tired or we have too much cabbage and nothing they actually like.

I always feel like I'm cheating, but have happy memories of cereal for supper as a treat (when my mother clearly was, in retrospect, at the end of her tether).

I'm not beyond giving it to them at lunch, either.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/11/2011 16:51

Absolutely. Crunchy Nut cornflakes and hot milk is food of the Gods.

I think some of the replies on this thread fall into the we're actually talking about different things when we talk about supper camp.

I mean supper as in something to eat before bed (dinner/tea having been eaten earlier in the evening). Posh people on MN Mean supper as in dinner/tea I think.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 28/11/2011 20:48

My DS likes weetabix or rice crispies, my DD likes cheerios, without any milk the strange child. They are hungry after school so have any early tea about 4.30 - 5.00pm and are then feeling peckish again before bed. Sometimes they have toast and marmite, or a bowl of yogurt or fruit and warm milk. On Saturdays they have sweets!

Candid · 28/11/2011 20:54

My children have cereal before bed sometimes if they're hungry. They usually have dinner at 5.30 so are often peckish around 7.
It's the easiest thing to give them and fairly healthy. I'm not cooking again and I'd rather they had cereal or toast than junk.

BooBoosMumma · 01/12/2011 10:40

Wow! Thanks everyone! Shreddies for supper it is!!!
