is it OK to freeze milk?

Whenever I do the big shop, I buy gallons of organic milk and freeze it as our local shops do not stock it. However, have always been faintly worried that all the goodness that organic milk has over ordinary will be lost in the freezing/defrosting process. Does anyone know??

what goodenss does organic have over ordiantery then?

Good to know that it is OK! Mud, organic milk has loads and loads of omega 3, normal milk has virtually none. And no chemicals etc - the obvious. I am not a big organic buyer (lack of loot mostly) but now buy only organic dairy products if I can.

The reason I buy organic is because of the conditions that the cows are kept in, and because of something I read about standard milk that grossed me out - which also came down in part to the conditions the cows are kept in.

I think that unfrozen milk tastes different - even the homogenated stuff (which the organic never is) which says it can be frozen. Most food loses it's goodness over time, so if you freeze it immediately it's probably a good idea (as opposed to having it sit in the fridge for days and days).

I freeze milk too. I think it can go a bit watery when defrosted, but I mainly use it for cooking/in hot drinks so it doesn't really matter. I read recently (can't remember where so it might not be true!) that there is such a glut of organic milk on the market at present that most supermarket milk is organic, whether labelled as such or not.

Do you freeze it in the containers it comes in, the plastic bottles or the cartons? I've wondered about freezing some for emerganicies but was worried it would burst out of the top as it froze!

I freeze it in the container it comes in, and have never had a problem with it.

I'm surprised at the suggestion that most supermarket milk is probably organic; there's a definite difference in the taste and on the rare occasions recently when I've had to have standard milk the difference in taste and appearance has been quite noticeable.

I too freeze in the container - only had one split. The taste is very different, took me a bit of getting used to - how cow's milk should taste basically! I thought that the opposite was true in supermarkets, that they were struggling to cope with the sudden demand for organic milk.
