nipple biting

Hi, I know this is a common problem but I've escaped it so far, partly because my daughter was late getting teeth! She's now 1 and has just started sinking her little razors into my nipples at the beginning, middle and / or end of feeds. IT HURTS LIKE HELL. I know people generally suggest that you take them off the breast instantly and say a firm 'no' 'no biting' sort of thing, but this is having no effect whatsoever except to seem to totally confuse her. She's obviously v. shocked and often quite upset that I speak firmly to her during a feed. And she then seems to get insecure and not finish feeding, her bottom lip hanging right out. Are there any other possible solutions anyone knows of, or is it time to call a quit to breast feeding? (she only has an early morning and night feed now).

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Hurts like hell doesn't it? No real suggestions I'm afraid. I did the firm "NO" but he got so upset he didn't feed for more than 24 hours. (I was away from home without expressor and actually went and bought another one as it was so painful)
Ds generally does it as he's dropping off to sleep if I try and take him off the breast, he clamps down hard. Only thing I can do is stick my finger in his mouth round the sides and sort of open his teeth. Pulling away makes him clamp on harder.
Not much help I'm afraid, but my watery-eyed sympathy with you

No real suggestions here either. My DS2 only did this a few times and I usually said "No" firmly and then gently pressed his face into the breast so he had to let go to breathe, a bit cruel but so is someone sinking their teeth into your nipples. My DS2 would get quite upset after a biting/telling off incident also. Hope things get better soon!

I know this sounds really cruel but have you tried gently pinching her nose so she has to let go? It might upset her but she has to let go and it may stop her doing it.

actually since I posted that message, she's stopped doing it. Don't know why. She sort of goes to have a little crunch down now and then and seems to think better of it, probably because I now squash her nose into my breast when she tries!
