Thanksgiving Dinner

I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner next week for two anglo-American couples (in UK). Don't want to roast a turkey just a month before xmas - and there will only be 6 of us anyway. Ideas please?

Hello. I'm an American ex-pat and I hate to say that only really turkey will do. I know most people have it here for Christmas, but most have it for Thanksgiving dinner out of tradition. Ever think of budging on your Christmas dinner this year and having goose or something else instead? Don't forget the mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie!

oh as for it being a meal only for six, those turkey crowns would work a treat!

Sainsburys have frozen breast covered in bacon ready to roast. That's what we're having! (also Anglo-American...)

Ready in 2 hours or so.
But don't mess with thanksgiving - dh and I went to a restaurant for our first thanksgiving and it was just wrong as they tried too hard to maki it different/ up to date.

I feared as much ... anyone know where you can buy an organic turkey crown? We only eat organic meat.

Luckily my butcher can do free range turkey crown, but 'tis not cheap either - Most of the Ocado stuff not available until week before xmas.

So I think we are going to have roast pumpkin and mushroom salad with chilli cornbread to start, then the turkey, with sweet potato and peanut gratin, green beans, stuffing with dried cranberries (need to find recipe), cranberry sauce, gravy and pecan pie for pudding. And marshmallows. Do I have to do mashed potatoes as well?

Does that sound acceptable? Good stuffing recipe anyone?

YY to mashed potatoes.

And make sure the cranberry sauce is straight out of the jar/ can. Nothing fancy Grin

I saw a display the other day for thanks giving. What are dried friend onions for?

GeorgeEliot · 18/11/2011 18:28

Aah yes bleurgh, I made it once in the USA and everyone was insistent that you had to be able to see the ridges from the cranberry sauce tin when it was decanted, for absolute authenticity.
We also waited to visit the supermarket until 10 pm the night before - all that was left was 24 lb frozen turkeys!
