Hey ladies, this must be an old question, but does someone have a receipe for a chocolate cake (and icing) using real chocolate for my son's birthday cake. Is it better to make two sandwich tins or one big one? I can't find one anywhere. Many thanks :o

deliahs chocolate guiness cake is gorgeous and is basically a 'heat in everything in a saucepan and chuck it in the oven' method. Delicious and very easy. Uses 70% cocoa chocolate. Will find recipe.....

Sounds great - can't use guiness tho - I live abroad and they don't have it here!

can you think of anything liquid to substitute it with?

I make a normal victoria sponge but add a couple of tbls of dark cocoa powder and a melted 100g bar of milk chocolate. It comes out moist and fluffy but with a real chocolate taste.

is this recipe any good?

I made this recently when I had no cocoa, although there is some in the recipe, I just left it out and it was really delicious and moist.

And for the icing I melt another 100g bar of milk choc, melt some butter and mix with some icing sugar and cocoa powder.

this is divine

I make one that for 3 eggs is
3 eggs
180g plain flour plus 3 tsp baking powder (the extra compensates for the weight of the choc in the mix)
180g butter
180g castor sugar
180g plain choc

I separate the eggs and whisk the whites until stiff, and add the melted choc after mixing the butter and sugar. Cooks at gas 4, divided into 2 tins just less than 8-inch

For icing I use melted choc and butter in the proportions of 150g plain choc to
65g butter. Probably need 2 lots. This can either be mixed and poured over, or whipped until milk choc in colour and then spread on with a palette knife.

Nigella's Old Fashioned Choc Cake is the one I always do

I made this a few weeks ago as a birthday cake - was very well received! www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3909/dead-good-chocolate-cake
