Knife help!

Bumpinthenight · 12/11/2011 16:33

I thought this was the best place to ask for help!

My brother wants some (good) knives for Christmas.
Can anybody recommend some? If they are expensive I will be buying one knife to start him off Grin.

He also wants a knife block like this so that any size and number of knives will fit in it - is this a good idea?

Thanks.

Global knives are really good.

My favourite knife is a wusthof trident cook's knife, which i have had for many years. DH likes Global knives.

If you are buying someone a good knife, I would steongly recommend that you take him with you when buying it as one of the most important things about a good knife is how it fits in your hand and how the balance works for you. It is a pretty personal thing. You might find that there is a cheap knife which is just perfect for him because of its weight, for instance, whereas the expensive, trendy ones don't do it for him.

I prefer the flat knife blocks that have grooves and sit in a drawer, myself, but that is because they are the only sort which will fit my cleaver. If he likes the type in your post and itfits his knives, go for it!

I personally like Sabatier. A medium-size cooks' knife about 7" blade would be a good start point. I have a couple of blocks like the one in your link. Also recommend you put a decent knife sharpener in the same parcel. Proper knives need a good sharpener.

The knife block looks very similar to my kapoosh one which I bought from Lakeland, it is bigger but twice the price. It's brilliant, way better than the traditional ones. I'd definitely recommend getting one.

Ps forgot to say that the kapoosh knife block can fit a cleaver in, mine hold 15 knives, a cleaver, a steel and a pair of scissors plus there is room for more.

Henkel, got my son some from steamer trading,if there is not one near you then they do online.Got his when they did a special offer so not as pricey.

Rather than a block i would recommend a magnet which allows all types of knives (you don't need a specific set)

Thanks all for the food for thought!
