I can do guacamole, and even homemade salsa.

But is it easy to make hummus? What about the friji-thingy? What other nice dips can I make?

Blue Cheese dip is just the best (and when we made it once for a dinner party people really thought it was shop-bought Wink

mix together Natural yoghurt and chopped up blue cheese
add 1/2 clove garlic
dash of garam masala
teaspoon of mint sauce (not necessary but gives it a bit of a minty taste too)

absolutely delish :)

fishandlilacs · 12/11/2011 05:38

I had some mango dip at a party a few weeks back-I think it was chopped frsh mango, mango chutney and creme fraiche. It was delightful.

recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1769313

probably similar to this.

Nigella makes roquamole-with roquefort cheese-I fantasise about ti now I'm pregnant and can't eat the blue cheese.

Not quite hummus - blend chickpeas with olive oil, lemon juice, curry powder, sun dried tomatoes and garlic - from a Jamie Oliver recipe that I have adapted a bit, it's bloody lovely with pitta bread.

Really unhealthy but very tasty cheese dip - fry onion and garlic in butter, then put in an ovenproof dish and mix in Mayo and mature cheddar, sprinkle with paprika and bake in the oven for 10 mins, serve with tortilla chips.

paulapantsdown · 12/11/2011 11:18

Have you ever heard Delia Smith say hummus? She pronounces it who-mouse.

Sorry, thats the only contribution I have to a thread about dip.

Trills · 12/11/2011 11:23

That's a very good contribution paula :o

paulapantsdown · 12/11/2011 11:36

thank you! actually I miss typed - she actually pronounces it WHO MOUSSE

Trills · 12/11/2011 12:07

That's a shame - who-mouse would have been funnier :o

ComradeJing · 12/11/2011 12:50

Has anyone got a seriously brilliant WHO MOUSSE recipe? I have never made it where it was not shit and boring and bland and thought "actually, the shop bought one is nicer"

Avocado, feta, lemon and olive oil whizzed together is deeeelish as a dip. delia

CalamityKate · 12/11/2011 12:52

A mixture of Reggae Reggae sauce and mayonnaise (adjusted according to taste) is lovely.

ppeatfruit · 12/11/2011 13:53

Because I don't eat chickpeas i make a very tasty dip with haricot beans, raw garlic and onion. lemon juice and olive oil.

Just before serving you whizz up more raw garlic, lemon juice and olive oil loads of cumin, and tahini and salt and pepper and or chili if you want it and mix it in. Everyone loves it.

ppeatfruit · 12/11/2011 13:56

Oh and comrade's avocado dip is fab I make that sometimes with tahini.

Trills · 12/11/2011 14:01

Avocadoes always go into extra-guacamole with me.

It's extra guacamole because there is extra garlic and extra lime and extra chilli (extra compared to call recipes I have ever seen, anyway).

my hummus never comes out right, the texture is never smooth and creamy

I do cannellini (sp?) bean based ones and just chuck in what I fancy.

What about tapenade (sp?) recipes, anyone got one of those?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2011 15:50

I make nice who-mousse, or I did before my food processor died.

I don't like shop bought stuff because the texture is too creamy: I prefer it a bit rougher.

I think when making it the main thing to remember is to not even try to be healthy and cut down on the oil - you need loads. Add a spoonful of natural yoghurt. And add paprika and some toasted cumin seeds on top for more flavour.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2011 15:51

Dd1 nearly choked over Delia saying who-mousse on that stupid programme. The child who never cooks sure appreciates cookery programmes!

2cats2many · 12/11/2011 15:54

There's a fantastic NZ dip that's made with a can of reduced cream and a packet of onion soup mix. You combine the two and leave it in the fridge for a couple of hours to set. Serve with corn chips.

It sounds bizarre, buit is the most delicious, moreish thing you can eat at a party. Not sure whether the ingredients are available in the UK.

thousandDenier · 12/11/2011 16:20

fishandlilacs - NHS have decreed that hard blue cheese like Stilton is OK during pg I'm getting stuck into a truckle later

This information has made my year

Trills · 12/11/2011 16:30

Ooooooo - 2cats I know you are not my NZ friend because she has no cats, but that's pretty much what she said when I complimented her on a dip at her party - it's a NZ thing and you need special onion soup mix.

I am making salsa (my own made-up recipe), guacamole, the butterbean dip with pitta chips, grissini, and stirring some harissa into yoghurt. I only have 4 nice dishes for dips so I think that will do.

Om nom nom

Tesco finest piri piri smoked mackerel, philly, wee dash of horseradish and season to taste.

yummy.

tb · 12/11/2011 17:57

Good dollop of really garlicky mayonnaise stirred into fromage frais/nat yoghurt/creme fraiche with a little (about a couple of pinches) of dried lovage stirred in. Suppose you could use celery salt if no dried lovage.

paulapantsdown · 12/11/2011 19:03

who mousse and and nice ham is tasty Grin

Sciencegeekmum · 12/11/2011 19:16

Garlic mayo - two tbsp mayo, good squeeze of garlic purée, drizzle of lemon juice and stir. Good with chips!

LordOfTheFlies · 12/11/2011 21:29

strong onion, blitzed in the food processor then add a tub of Philedelphia (full fat gives a better texture than reduced fat)
Blend, then blend in a good squirt of tomato ketchup, to make it pale pink.

Sounds a bit meh but it's delish with carrot sticks, peppers, crisps, potato skins, tortilla chips...

ShirleyKnot · 12/11/2011 22:02

I got static via PM for my chilli dip so here we go:

1 x jar roasted peppers
3 x red chillies
1 x clove garlic, peeled
Zest 1 x lime plus juice
80g bunch fresh coriander - stems cut off
2 tsp maldon sea salt or 1/1.5 teas pouring salt
125ml groundnut oil

Drain jar of peppers and into food processor, add chillies (to taste - ie remove seeds if no likey heaty - leave if you're a mental)

Add garlic, lime, coriander stems and whizz up.

add leaves, salt, and then slowly add the oil as the motor is running.

It IS DELISH and hot and takeable to parties.
