Breakfast - I'm awkward & difficult but I still want something yummy & warming at this time of year - what would you suggest?

In an ideal world I would like porridge. I want to like porridge, I have tried making it every way imaginable - but it revolts me. I can manage about 3 spoonfuls & then I can barely swallow it for wanting to retch.

I can't eat toast or bread because I've got IBS & wheat is one of the triggers. But I want something nice to have for breakfast - ideally that could be eaten warm. It has to be quick or prepared the night before, as I have to be out of the house by 7.45am & I'm not prepared to get up at silly o'clock to cook a full english.

I don't have any problem with random stuff that wouldn't be considered normal breakfast foods - I just need some suggestions.

Eggs?

My dh has the cereal bars put of 'nigella express' for breakfast.

Japanese have Miso Soup for breakfast... warm & nutritious, if unusual. My preference is eggs... rather lovely Frittata this morning. You could knock up an old fashioned Kedgeree with smoked fish and rice the night before.

NormanTheForeman · 08/11/2011 10:38

Omelette or a bowl of scrambled eggs would be good. Or baked beans with bacon.

canyou · 08/11/2011 10:41

Eggs Benedict with wheat free toast? Omelette, scrambled egg, cooked breakfast [bacon etc] prepared the night before and heated while you have shower get dressed, pancakes [buckwheat], kedgeree, salmon and eggs, sliced fried potatoes with tomatoes, eggs, spinach beans, granola bar and tea, muffins[rice flour]

Bugsy2 · 08/11/2011 10:42

Thank you for the suggestions. I do love eggs & often have scrambled eggs with a variety of things added - but I'm looking for a bit of variety. I'm going to check out nigella's breakfast bars.

One of the nicest breakfast I have is chopped up apple and bacon fried together. I often add onion, but that would take too long in the morning. Do add salt and pepper, though.

TotemPole · 08/11/2011 11:26

Bugsy, have you tried the Quaker oats so simple with the flavourings. Tip it in a bowl, use the packet to measure the milk(I use a bit less than the mark), then microwave for 2-3 mins. Put the bowl to soak after you finish, so it's easier to clean later.

Em3978 · 08/11/2011 11:29

Rice pudding, either make your own or open a tin! I love it for breakfast :)

Bugsy2 · 08/11/2011 11:32

I have Totem - can do about 5 spoonfuls before the gag reflex gets going. They smell so good too. I have a Golden Syrup flavoured box in the cupboard. It annoys me so much that I can't like porridge/oaty breakfast meals. Everything about porridge appeals to me - except swallowing it!!!!! Every few years, I'll give myself a mental shake & tell myself to get over it & end up a few spoons in gagging!

I know you said you have to be out at 7.45 but can you eat breakfast when you get to work? If so, maybe an Indian style rice bowl.

I've done this a few times, you can make it the night before/couple of days at a time. I put in rice (obviously!), cherry tomatoes, spring onions, mushrooms and bacon, with some garam masala. Then when cooled slice/chop hard boiled egg in.

TotemPole · 08/11/2011 11:46

It must be the texture that you have trouble with, it is claggy. The only thing I can suggest is try washing it down with a 'clean' drink. I usually have black coffee.

FrozenChocolate · 08/11/2011 11:58

can't you try the porridge more milky? i have that gag thing if it is too thick.

Bugsy2 · 08/11/2011 12:07

I'm liking the rice suggestions - both sweet & savoury. I love rice and it could be done the night before.
Frozen - I swear I've tried it more milky, less milky, with cream, with salt, without salt, soaked overnight, made instantly, made on the hob, made in the oven, made in the microwave, with a dash of cornflour, using oatbran, rather than flakes. I really couldn't have tried harder to like it!

Bugsy I cannot eat porridge, wheatibix, or any thing like it not even rice pud or tapioca I gag before I even swallow so it is not just you. But what I do at work for customers breakfast is serve it with stewed fruit, at the moment it is chopped dried fruits cooked in orange juice and honey it will change the consistency slightly and that may help, stewed rhubarb with ginger is also popular, people eat it with porridge or hot with Greek yoghurt.

TheRhubarb · 08/11/2011 12:42

I don't like porridge but what I do like is Ready Brek (which is apparently not 'real' porridge according to my dh) with honey over it.

Failing that I also, weirdly, like All Bran with hot milk poured over it. Same with shredded wheat. Most things taste nicer when they are heated up.

I recently made some porridge for the kids with a teaspoon of Cadbury's drinking chocolate mixed in - they loved it!

How about this Hot Oat Krumbly. I am a bit funny with porridge but this is great on a cold morning... they do different varieties of it, though I only buy it on special offer otherwise it's too expensive.

PattySimcox · 09/11/2011 18:55

MIL used to run a B&B and would grill all her bacon, sausages, black pud, tomatoes, mushrooms in a big batch the night before and then pop them in the microwave the next morning while she did the eggs for the guests. Said it didn't taste any different.

Full english in 2 mins.

Bugsy2 · 10/11/2011 08:51

Going to check out Hot Oat Krumbly - it doesn't look like it has too much wheat, so I might be able to eat it & if I can't, I'm sure the DCs will. Dribbling at thought of full english - it is one of my favourite meals. Might be a bit too decadent to have it every morning though!

Gram flour and spinach pancakes:

gram flour (chick pea flour) is nice as it is protein based .
4 tbs gram flour, 1 egg, fresh spinach leaves

mix with water till pancake mixture texture: runs slowly off spoon
add salt, turmeric, ginger to taste ( 2 pinches of each is about right with a bit of grated ginger).
add a handful of spinach.
make pancakes.

this takes 5 mins max. No need to add ginger/turmeric if you don't want to but both are good for guts.

Bugsy2 · 10/11/2011 10:29

Yum! I love chick peas but had never realised Gram flour was made from them. I'll be in Holland & Barrett at lunchtime.
